Forend Caps for halfstock
« on: October 18, 2011, 11:43:55 PM »
I am restocking a TC Hawken for a friend of mine with one of the pre inletted stocks from TOW,other then the factory replacement forend cap what can be used? I have looked on TOW and did see anything that looked correct, the stock will have to be inletted for the cap no matter what kind I use.He is hoping for the type that was used on the original Hawken.   thanks in advance

A sheet metal cap would be used on a Hawken rifle, and TOW carries some that are made by Ted Cash.  But you could pour a pewter cap more easily and it'd look fine.

Yeah,
TOW has cast half stock caps. I have done several now, and I have copied the lines of the Lyman GPR.
One has a pipe, and the other does not. I prefer the pipeless for looks. Being as they are moderns, I used JG-Weld to attach the cap. The gap between the stock and the cap, I filled with Black Onyx chips, mixed with 1hr Epoxy. The resulting finish when sanded down looks good. It becomes a black stripe between the wood, and the cap. Once the stock is refinished, the cap can really shine with rubber wheels on a Foredom. With the polish, I prefer the pink rubber. Not mega fine, but fine enough. Cratex takes out the flap wheel marks.
I like the way the foreend caps look. The one I did from the Hawken shop, was a little easier, but I preferred the TOW ones.

I did a restock on a TC Hawken for a customer a while back. I used a formed steel cap, attatched with a screw from inside the barrel channel and seperate pinned entry pipe from TOTW, it turned out real good. You also might want to reshape the lock panels and the cheek piece, that would make it look more Hawken and LESS T/C. Look at the pics' of the Hawken kits on TOTW or search the net for some pics of original Hawkens for reference.....Ed
