The New York DEC classifies Red Squirrels as vemin, and allows shooting them at any time.  There are no Fox squirrels that I'm aware of in the area where I live, but I have seen them in other parts of the state.

    There is a town here in Illinois called Olney. They have a huge population of white squirrels that live in and around town, they are so popular the city police has a white squirrel on there arm patch. And these squirrels are white, not yellow white, but white.    AL

Here, the little red squirrles, ie: Pine Squirrels are clasified as fur bearing animals and cannot be legally shot, only trapped by a licenced trapper.
