man, those lock panels are big enuff to have lunch on. Being somewhat of a noob, I have to ask-- is that common to originals?

There's no question that Steve's a very accomplished engraver and carver, and I admire his willingness to follow his own vision, though it's not my thing - I'm more of a traditionalist.

This would be classified as "New School" work; basically using the longrifle as a canvas for one's artistic expression, without trying to achieve an end product that would represent period work. Outstanding execution.

Mr. Boyleston grew up in the antique business and has seen about all there is to see in the longrifle
world. I'll let him know he is failing by not copying what others have done in the past. If this kind of
thinking were pervasive, then we would never have seen the Lehigh School, Bedford School, Upper
Susquehanna, Tennesee etc etc etc. Certainly my ancestors, the Shreckengosts marched to their own tune of
artistic expression in their rifle building.
He does not have a website.

Wow, that might be overstating things just a bit. Many folks have enjoyed the pictures you've posted and said positive things. Keep in mind that in general the makers here are on the traditional end of the spectrum. There's no right or wrong, but I would not take a fine custom 1980's .300 Winchester sporting rifle to an antique gun show and expect to get a crowd of droolers. Some attendees would undoubtedly admire the execution, but maybe not spend the time they would at the table with an original Beck. Nor would I take a Bill Shipman longrifle to a modern gun show and expect a crowd of droolers. Wait a minute, maybe I would.

Work presented here is open for critique.

Ok neat! I do wonder about that flat washer or flat washer effect under that tang bolt head. Is she a smoothy that he intends to use that slightly raised bolt head as his rear "sight" Or???

I have to agree with you, this is an excellent piece of work and shows the maker's talent off beautifully. Everything being made, in my opinion, does not have to emulate something that has been made before. There's no reason not to create something that just suites your taste, PC correct or not. I don't think there is a right or wrong in artistic expression, it's very personal.

Nice decoration, but there are some flaws in the archetectural foundation that negates all the frosting for me.

Like I said I am a noob and meant no harm... I am very fond of the engraving on the brass. Very skillfully done... I just felt that the lock area was kinda square and too wide... I was wondering if this was a certain style or...

Suzkat, Obviously, your friend is an accomplished engraver/carver who applied a number of classic designs (many found in Meek's book etc.) to what appears to be an early step wrist longrifle, w/o adhering to the basic architectural elements. You cited the effort as a possible beginning of a new school, and then mentioned the Shreckengosts style in the same vein. I agree that the Shreckengost style was out there far enough that you can recognize one from across the room. They also did some excellent engraving, BUT did they establish a Shreckengost school, not really! There was no widespread geographic area or number of contemporary gunmakers that adopted the Shreckengost style. The Shreckengost gunsmiths were unique and that is what the piece presented here is. I don't think you will see many people rushing to adopt large flat lock panels or razor sharp comb lines etc. etc. Next July submit the piece at Dixon's gunfair, and then read their critique sheet.

Beautiful work!
This fellow has talent! Perhaps not entirely American in school, but truely a work of art.
Something I would expect to see in Liege, or Amsterdam. This fellow does not have to take back seat to anyone!
Thank you for posting, and please show us more.
I would like to see how he treated the forearm and muzzle end.

Ken Prather, My post was not in response to yours. You made a specific statement about the lock panels
that has merit.
Lucky R A, I did not intend to imply that he was trying to start a new school. I simply meant that if we are not
free to experiment and express new ideas, then the makers who created their own styles and had others follow to create a "school", would never have been able to happen. I also didn't suggest Shreckengosts created a school. But they were free to express their own artistic ideas and I think they did it with great success.
The intent of my post was to say that gunmakers should be free to create. If we take that away, then it is no longer an art form. The statement "Obvious talent by someone who could really do some fine longrifle work with some research and study of architecture." was not thought through. I'm confident that if the builder wanted to do so, he could copy about anything he chose to.
