"The A. Verner," RCA 63
« on: November 12, 2011, 09:45:37 PM »
I have spent a fair amount of time studying and building Bucks Co. guns.  One of the things on my "To Do" list has been Andrew Verner's rifle, as featured in RCA 63.   A number of months back Taylor submitted his admirable effort on this rifle.  Well, Taylor, that was just what I needed to get me to take the time to make an effort myself.   I was extremely lucky that through a friend, I got to see, handle, measure, and photograph the original and make a tracing of the outline.  In this effort, I attempted to fairly reflect the finish and wear of the original.   The original at one time had a red tinted violin varnish finish with a decidedly yellow undertone.  I started with a yellow stain and then applied the red violin finish over the entire gun.  This finish was then removed in the wear areas, and a light brown spirit based stain applied to these areas.  The really dark areas were stained in, and then a lacquer finish was applied over this to raise and crinkle the finish.  When the finish was completed, the entire gun was given a couple of coats of thinned spar varnish to seal and protect it.
The original gun has a 46-1/4 barrel and this one a 46" barrel.  The original LOP was just about 13-3/4 " as is this one.   I used Reaves Goehring castings.  The lock is Golden Age Siler with the frizzen, hammer screw, and lockplate modified in various areas to resemble the original.  All other parts were shop made.

Well, I'm pleased to be the first to respond to your posting.

What's not to love?  Just plain gorgeous.  Apart from being in "The Mutual Admiration Society", I really like the rifle.  Absolutely nailed it!!

And thanks for your comments on my effort.

Lucky, I hope you'll send some pics to Art and Jan Riser for the Contemporary Blogspot.  I'd love to see lots of detailed pics...breech, inlays, carving - you know.  And take it out and shoot it - LOTS!  I love shooting mine.  Leatherbelly took a pic of me and my Verner last weekend... I'll see if I can post it.

Ron, what a handsome rifle! A really fine job, just lovely. Agree with Taylor on 'Nailing It'. Congratulations!

You've done a spectacular job with the metal colors and textures. Not easy to do. Note the lock and barrel colors. Bluish black, pitted a bit and certainly looking aged, just the right amount. Brass and silver have a soft glow. Wow. Great job. You hit your stride on this baby!

Ron....outstanding job, a gun that I never considered doing, just too much of everything.   I might consider a "Verner"
barn gun.  Being a retired trooper, how many donuts did it take.........ha..............Don

Guys,  Thanks so much for your kind responses to the Verner rifle.   The approval of your peers certainly gives one a boost to keep striving.   I certainly appreciate all that can be learned from this forum.  I intend to have the rifle front and center at the Lewisburg show, so stop by pick her up and chat a bit.   Don, since we share the same area at the Lewisburg show, how about you bring the doughnuts, and we will see if this old Trooper can show you how to make them disappear:>}    Taylor,  it looks like you are doing some "natural aging" on your Verner.  I hope you can make meat with her this year....
Happy Holidays to all

One of my favorite guns. I really like the way you did yours.

Don, really, a Verner Barn gun? What's next, a Kuntz barn gun? Everything you see has 'barn' potential with you. I have yet to see one of these mythical beauties. Pure rumor. Humph. Humbug.

Ron, that's a great looking rifle, really well done.  I especially like what you did with the finish, the contrast and depth in different areas is beautiful.  Thanks for sharing!
