Time for a liner replacement?
« on: November 21, 2011, 05:11:49 PM »
Went shooting yesterday and after 12 years of shooting my Frank House/Jeff Cline gun I think by the looks of the liner in the photo below it is time to replace the liner.  Spent quite a bit of time drilling, grinding and picking out threads as it would not come out by unthreading it.  Then I had to build a new stainless liner as the threads were 5/16"-24.  All better now.

Macon,

Dave,
I would like to see a pic of the new liner.  You mean Mr. house delivered it with that rust on it?

Apparently, not everyone has heard of the House brothers Woodbury Patina. Some people need to get out more!

That's not rust, that's patena.    ??? ???  Actually, what you are seeing is a dirty barrel.  I have been meaning to change out that liner for over a year.  Everytime I got the rifle cleaned I put it away, so this time I tried a different tactic, I replaced the liner first.  ;D ;D

Nice job on the liner, Dave - nicest, smoothest, cleanest part of the gun - for now. ;D

Tom - I have 2 rifles, a pistol and a smoothbore with L&R locks and another rifle with an old Siler made from parts - they are all wonderful locks, giving very fast ignition. My fastest, as fast or faster than a Chambers delux Siler, is the L&R Dickert.  I had to replace a feather spring on one which fired just as reliably and as fast as ever without it, and had to draw the temper of one frizzen. That's it.

Daryl,

All in good fun,

I have 2 of the L&R Bailes locks that are on my personal flint guns as they are the fastest left hand locks on the market, have installed both right and left hand cap versions with no problems out of any of them.

They are a bit of a pain to clean up as the pan is not removeable but its well worth the effort.

Hey Dave, I saw on the American Guns show all you need to do is fill a trough with wet coffee grounds, dig in the barrel, and it comes out looking old.  Of course you have to drink a whole lot of coffee to get enough grounds to fill a trough.   ::) ::) ::)Perhaps you will have enough after the Gunmakers event next week.

No problem Chip, you forgot that my oldest daughter works at Starbucks.  Which grounds work best, Pike Place, Sumatra, or how about Christmas Blend?  Sometimes I amaze even myself.

Wait until about mid Feb after the new Starbucks Blonde brew is out.  Its not supposed to be soa lighter-body roast so it might turn out a less aged barrel.  Say only 100 years old instead of 200. ;D ;D ;D

Don't think I'd like a Starbucks rotted barrel - there's enough bitterness in the world now. ;)
