Using Spray Paint with finish
« on: November 28, 2011, 05:24:24 AM »
Hello All,

I am considerng using black spray paint when finishing my project.  I have studied on it some, and do like the effect it gives.  What I have read is that it is used after a couple of coats of stain.  Is this correct?  Also, are there any other precautions I should keep in mind as I venture on?

I use flat black after the stain and the first coat or two of finish. Steel wool the high spots and wear areas and then more finish.  Another good effect is spray the paint on a cloth and rub it in leaving it build up in the crevices.

If you spray it on BEFORE a coat or two of finish, you likely will have a panic attack.   You will have a hard time cutting it back to create worn areas.   You also are gonna want something that sparys fine mist, not globs of paint.

An airbrush is what the fine fellers use.

You can also mix your own colors with an airbrush, burnt umbers mixed with a little lampblack, for example, to give a more brownish-dirty look.

Air brush with the stain you are using on your stock, or even a darker stain, adds very interesting accents to an otherwise plain stock; especially if you have lighter streaks in the wood.

I have the info from Mike Brooks' site, I just needed some clarity on when to use it.  I have also looked over Nate's website.

H. House demonstrates this in one of his videos. He is lightly rubbing the paint off the high areas ans then uses steel wool to finish the process...... if I recall correctly this is after linseed oil but more oil can be added after as well
