Right Brass?
« on: December 12, 2011, 04:09:34 PM »
Ordering some sheet brass for side plates, pipes, etc from metals on-line. So which is the right alloy for a color to go with my cast guards and butt plates C260, C360 or C464? They have a couple of other alloys mentioned that are only available in tubing C230 and C330 if those are the best choices I'll need another supplier name as well.

Thanks for your help,

Ken

I think that 360 is the commonly used brass. Nice yellow color.

C260 is commonly known as cartridge brass.  This is what most use for longrifle parts.  Depending the exact alloy of the mounts, it's not always a perfect match in color, but in time this seems to even out with oxidation.  I believe C360 is basically a modified version of C260 for improved machinibility.  If you by sheet brass from any of the parts suppliers you'll get C260 I'm sure.

260.
It is not a weird alloy being copper and zinc with traces of iron and lead and is very malleable if annealed.
Since its copper and zinc its brass colored and will match castings actually made of brass almost perfectly.
464 is Naval Bronze and this you do not want.

Thanks for the advice looks like I am good with the 260 or the 360 alloys.  I wanted to avoid a bronze color that wouldn't match the rest of the hardware. I think 260 was a tad cheaper so it is the winner.

Happy Holidays to everyone here!
