Iron nose cap

20 yrs ago I bought my 1st kit ,a 50 c Tenessee yes made in Japan from LOG CABIN GUN SHOPPE.
Im looking at refurbishing her. Gonna put a iron banana patch box on her,redue stain to a deeper clolor and wish to put a iron noes cap on her as presently she has none. Would any of you know where I could obtain one
I would encourage anyone to work with the Kindigs from LCGS they are really amazing people

If you were to let us know what size barrel you have your request might get a better answer. On the other hand you could make one, not that difficult, and sized to fit what you have! Good luck!

Log Cabin sells a sheet steel nose cap (#52EC9) for $10.10
"Formed from 18 ga. sheet steel. 1-7/8" long. Flat, low profile. Cut for 3/4",  13/16", 7/8", 15/16" or 1" barrel. From Ted Cash Manufacturing."

Most other M/L suppliers sell nose caps in steel though not as many varietys generally available as in brass and G/Silver.

Make one, you will enjoy it much more. Here is a link to a tutorial for one made out of brass but the same process works for mild steel. If you don't need the groove underneath the cap (for the rr channel extension) you can use a piece of steel round stock instead of a wooden form. I use two radiator hose clamps to hold the steel in place while I fold over the end. The size round stock depends on the barrel diameter where the nose cap goes. You can then follow Acer's tutorial on folding over the part that goes under the barrel. Or you can cut a second piece and soft solder it on the end of the main part of the cap (this takes the place of hammering the metal over the end of the roundstock/wood). Wish I were able to draw a photo, much easier than it sounds.

Try Tennessee Valley Manufacturing on line.  You can find them on Google.  They make the banana patch boxes as well as nosecaps in steel.

Never tried it. I just use a smooth file to get all the dents/hammer marks out. Then I use 220/320/380 automotive wet/dry paper on it then brown it. I suspect if you were to leave it polished you might want to go to 400/600 grit paper.

NAPA auto parts stores have wet or dry paper of 1200 grit and maybe even finer, The best of all these polishing "papers"is 4/0 but it is hard to find. I bought mine from a man who always had a good bit of it on hand and thought I would wait and use what I have before buying more. Long story made short,he died suddenly and I have no idea where all those fine abrasives went because his area in that flea market building was evacuated on a week day when the thing was usually closed. Lesson learned is "never take anything for granted" and if you see something you need,buy it as the seller may not ever be back as happened to vendor Jack Buzzard.

No need to anneal at all if you are using mild steel sheet.

STeel will burnish, just as brass or silver does. It will take more pressure, and a hint of oil helps a lot. Fewer scratches in it,the better your burnish job will come out. But steel will tarnish in a heartbeat, so why not brown it?

Brass anneals when it is heated and quenched.Steel if heated and quenched can get hard as glass or nearly so. A nose cap in steel is probably dead soft 1018(maybe)so it retains the shape it was pressed into to begin with.
