Book and/or DVD For Learning Checkering?

I want to learn the basics and am wondering which titles you would recommend. I see Brownells has a DVD by Joe Balickie but at $70 I think I will have to pass on that one..

  I would recommend : Firearm Design & Assembly, checkering and carving gun stocks by  Monty Kennedy .
 Rather dry reading and  while it shows mostly modern firearms and carving . Its predominantly on checkering and how to do layouts and such .
 Cover both hand tools  and some  on the older  rotary  type tools . Contains  drawings for making a cradle  plus lots more . Of the 250 pages , 190 of them are on checkering  with multiple chapters on  some of the best know  carvers of that time . Like Shetlander ,  Hearn and Linden

I have an old copy of Checkering & Carving of Gunstocks by Monty Kennedy which I picked up at a gun show. I consider it well worth the $10.00 that I paid for it. The dust cover on my copy has a photo of two old longrifles that I drool over every time I pick it up. The text and photos are mainly of modern stuff but still good reading and help for a beginer.   Smylee

Thanks for the recommendation, I will look for that book.

Unfortunately Smartflix does not have the Joe Balicke DVD available for rent and says they will not for a very long time. Perhaps I'll find someone who wants to sell or loan it out.

Are the longrifles pictured on that book carved or checkered?  If one of them is checkered, could you post a picture to share?  Thanks in advance.

Glen, those rifles were both carved, one is an John Noll and the other is a Lehigh/Allentown style gun the way I see it. There are alot of checkered examples in most of the major longrifle books. One by Kuntz/Rupp in the Accouterments by James Johnston is one of my favorites. Sorry but my computer wont let me post pics as of yet.  Good luck and Happy Holidays    Smylee

I bought my copy of Checkering & Carving of Gunstocks in the real early 80s, used. The seller said that it was only a year or two old at that time. Its a hard cover book but the dust cover is were the photo of the mentioned rifles is.   Smylee

Mattole, Next time you are at Grundmans, check out the book shelves on the right as you come in the door. There is a copy of the Kennedy checkering book there for sale. Also, they have good checkering tools, both singly and as a set for sale. And, if you get stuck check with Paul and he will be glad to help you out. Both Paul and Fred are excelland checkerers. Mori
