Stock Blank Thickness??
« on: December 21, 2011, 04:54:22 AM »
Hello,

May be a silly question...but is a 2" thick blank too thin for a stock?

Thanks

It depends on what your going to build, 2 inches is barely enough for a late style gun if straight or crooked in the right way. What I mean by crooked is if the but end happens to have 1/4 inch of bow to the right for cast off or the left for cast on, for a left handed gun.  BJH

Thanks .....I have a buddy who has a few slabs of walnut 2" thick x 10" tall x 5ft and i was thinking about trying a hawken stock or two. They all are pretty straight and not bowed.

The dimensions of those planks should be just perfect for a Hawken.

This is true, provided that the sides are free of gouges or other defects, especially in the lock and sideplate areas.

Those would have to be some pretty significant gouges since an 1 1/8" barrel breech with 3/16" wide lock panels only adds up to 1 1/2".
