information please

If this is not in the correct place please move it.

Years ago I bought a 15/16 X 36 cal X32" rifle barrel.  It is marked on the top flat
"Sharon Rifle Barrel" and is drilled and tapped for sights, 2 holes, and cut for a dovetail at the muzzle.  On the bottom of the barrel is a dovetail for an under lug and is drilled and tapped for an under rib.   On the right oblique flat is stamped "for black powder only .36 cal".  I think that this was manufactured for a TC replacement barrel.  Does anyone have any knowledge of these barrels, are they accurate, what would be the rate of twist, etc.

Hi ya Whitebear,

I don't know any details on what your barrel fits, but you can get pretty close on the twist by running a ramrod with a snug patch down the bore, make an index mark on the rod and the muzzle, then as you pull the rod back out, let the rifling spin it and count the revolutions, or partial revolutions.  Then it's a math problem from there.  1/2 turn equals 1:64, 3/4 turn equals 1:48.  Hope this helps.

Whitebear,

Your description indeed sounds like it was a TC replacement barrel at one time. My Sharon barrels all have shot very well since using one on my first build in 1978. It remains very accurate yet today!

I looked up info. on the twist and they are 1:48 in this caliber. Also, these barrels were button rifled 9 thousands depth rather than cut rifled. The Stock #for trivia purposes was TCH3600.

Hope this helps you with your project?

Merry Chjristmas!

Good barrel, some fussed over the button rifled barrels and preferred the cut rifling ones (larger calibers).  Should be a tack driver, I'm guessing.

Thanks everyone for the information.  It is going into a planes rifle half stock.  I'm looking forward to making this.
