« on: January 02, 2012, 06:50:35 PM »
You might be tired of reading about our fine shoots/w walks and great weather lately... So, change the channel!!

In any case we enjoyed a good w walk at Boyertown, Pa yesterday.  Good shooting fine weather and great folks.  26 shooters, 51 degrees.   :D

We also welcome that club to our Pennsylvania Federation of Black Powder shooters Inc.  Total of 30 clubs in said Federation...

Roger, I never get tired of your posts.  Our group shot yesterday as well, but it was just a fun shoot - no contest - with a little party in the club house afterwards.  We only had seven show up.  The temperature was ~ 10 F.  By the time we got to target 18, some of us had had enough of the cold, and went straight for the fire.  Still, we all had a lot of fun.

Glad to hear it, Roger.  It's nice to hear from the other shooters on the board.

One of our club members, Hatchet Jack, just passed 10,000 shots (or was it 8,000 shots?) fired in his Hawken Full Stock Flint Hawken that Taylor built him just a couple years ago, seems to me.  Yeah, he shoots a lot.  He shoots every Sunday and Monday, Sunday with a smoothbore and Monday with the Hawken. All of his 3 20 bore Tulle's have over 10,000 shots fired and he bought them slightly used, from Leather Belly.

He informed us yesterday to tell you that 3 is enough.  You know he'll crumble if the price is right.

Ol' "Hatchet Jack (of sound mind and broke leg)!!  So, I'll ask being the owner of a barreled rifle with 60,000 rds thru her that still shoots tight, does ol Jack use a wood rod or steel w/a guide?  Use a short starter?" (with or without a guide).  Clean with hot water or cold? Is he a shooter that properly maintains cleans and oils between shooting sessions (a loaded question for certain!) ???  Any signs of that Hawken bore getting slick?  Does she still shoot tight groups from a rest?

Inquiring minds need to know (read nosey).

After shooting, HJ can hardely wait to get home to clean his gun.

As far as I know, he doesn't use really hot water. He cleans his barrels off the stock and in his bathtub - yes- he's single.

He uses the rifle's hickory rod only for loading and cleaning, no muzzle protectors.

Can't say one way or the other regards the barrel becomming slick, Roger.  He spit patches and uses light loads - like around 70 to 80gr. - it's a .62 I think.

First saturday each month is our "primitive match" and I really enjoy the informal competition. We try to be HC but we dont have any thread counters and we welcome all. This is a good way to get started reinacting and learning. We had a father and son out last match and the boy really got into hawk throwing and wore a path to the block. Even if I don't shoot well I always place well in the eating. We most always have some good victuals cooked on the fire. Pone bread and salt pork or roasted venison steaks etc.., Last time I put together a pot of venison stew that simmered on the fire while we shot the woods walk. We usually put down blanket prizes and generally have a grand time. I managed to win first this time by a tie breaker! As the old saying goes even a blind hog finds an acorn ever now and then.
