Piedmont VA Round Toe Rifle
« on: January 08, 2012, 09:45:35 PM »
I just finished this interpretation of an earlier Piedmont School VA Rifle, and since I haven't posted anything in a while, thought I'd share some pics.

The piece is stocked in Maple, stained with my home made AF, and finished with Permalyn sealer.  The barrel is a 44", .54 cal Rice "B" weight, cold blued and rubbed back.  The brass was given a patina for some "gentle aging".  The trigger guard and butt piece are from Reeves.  The trigger guard was designed by Wallace Gussler, and is one of my favorites.  The blank came from Wayne Dunlap.  I had Dave Keck inlet the barrel, and he also shaped it to his/Fred's early VA profile, that I modified and rounded the toe.

Any questions, suggestions, or comments,  please let me know.

Really fine.  There's a lot to like there.  Instinctively when I saw it "Southern rifle" came to mind for several reasons; the tang carving, the guard and buttplate, the sideplate and lock choice.  Construction question:  think I see a pin holding down the front of the buttplate extension; is that right?  Inspiration question, what originals influenced your planning?  Is the carving on the cheekpiece something seen a little later on some rifles of the region?

I love long-wristed rifles and this one really appeals to me.

That is one nice looking rifle Ed.  I especially like the finish and the highlites you incorporated into it.  Someone somewhere is a very happy camper.

Thanks, Gents.  Rich, the inspiration comes from a rifle that Wallace Gussler has.  One of the coolest I've seen.  It has a plain brass patch box, but you can see where the dove tail on the butt piece was filled in.  Anyway, that's where I got the idea.  There wasn't any (as I can remember) carving, so that was all my "add ons".  Yes, there's a pin that secures the butt piece tang.

Mountainman, the stain is Aquia Fortis.  75% nitric acid, diluted with  6 parts water / 1 part acid.  I added a chunk of metal off an old horse drawn manure spreader, and let that dissolve for about a day and a half, maybe two, can't remember for sure. What's left of the metal is taken out, and the acid/water mix is the stain.  I apply the stain with a fine scotch brite pad, allow to dry, then blush with a heat gun.

Cheers,

Ed

Tim,
Look in the first and second photo above the cheekpiece just below the comb line. Its pinned like an English Fowler butt-plate. Oops, sorry further back toward the buttplate just above the butt carving on the second photo and mid-way above the patch box door on the first photo.

Ed that sure looks like a fine rifle. Very nice workmanship. Question; with the trigger gaurd rail away from the bottom of the stock is your grip still ok in that area?   Best wishes    Smylee

Ed,

Another fine looking rifle!  I really love it!  Everything about it is so harmonious - it all looks like it belongs together - nothing out of place - a single statement of the craft!

Beautiful!
