The Gunsmith of Grenville County
« on: January 14, 2012, 02:29:22 AM »
The book by Peter Alexander according to an email I received today from Scurlock Publishing indicates "they have plans to reprint this book, but have no release date at this time."

I took this as great news as the copy I have is getting pretty ragged. ;D   And the thought of paying $300 plus for another copy doesn't sit well when I need to spend the bucks to fix the &(*&#@$%^%$##%$ snowthrower.

I got an email from Mr. Alexander a few days ago. He said the book should be out by July.

I thought you were kidding around about the price till I looked on Amazon. WOW!  $300 is insane.  Why is it so much now, just cause it's out of print?

My wife bought that book for me 6 or 7 years ago as a Christmas gift. She said she was surprised to have to pay $35 for it. I told her she shouldn't have paid that much. Glad she did. WOW - $300 is crazy.

GOOD books are priceless and the rest aren't worth bothering with. I have both gun and automobile books that cost $75 to $100+and think they are bargains. To me Rowe's book on The American Percussion Schuetzen Rifle is a treasure of color photography as is the Automobile Quarterly's spinoff called "E.L.Cord,his cars and is empire".This is a $300 limited edition about a wheeler/dealer,capitalist that believed in the spectacular and when coupled with FREE enterprise, we have three of America's greatest cars because of his ideas.
The acquisition of books depends on the level of interest in any given subject.Mine go beyond guns to fine cars, big steam locomotives, pre 1940 aircraft, especially sea planes and amphibians. To me,variety IS the spice of life.

I picked up the book in the bookstore at Col.Williamsburg a few years ago and put it back down. My wife went behind me and picked it up as a birthday gift and I am really glad she did.

FWIW,  ALL of Tom Rowe's books are excellent reference books as well as coffee table / gun-porn.   Marcott's books on the Remington rifles also fall in that category.   I've worked in the high end book publishing area and I can tell you that the publishing quality values are very very high for these books.  selling at about 100 bucks a copy leaves a very small profit for the publisher/distributor.

Book "values"  have a lot of different factors beyond the content.  grades of paper, color reproduction, binding etc all have a wide cost variant range.

I like the spiral bound Grenville for the work area, but I'l love to see a high quality hard bound edition for my library shelves.

Maybe 20 years ago or more Alexander wrote a series of articles for "Muzzleloader" magazine titled "The Gunsmith of Greenville County".  This series went on for a couple of years or more and I believe that most of the information printed later as a book was initially seen in the "Muzzleloader" articles.  I never saw any reason to purchase the book when it came out.

I sure would love to have a copy. I have leared something from all the books. Wish there were millions of different ones.
