How does this work?  I've seen pics and drawings of old rifles using these mechanisms, but understand this one.  Is it really a matchlock and snaphounse combined?

 it's a wheelock and match lock combined if the pyrite fails as sometimes they do or the wheelock mechanism fails, the match lock is a back up ignition. Sometimes there were two dogs if one pyrite crumbled in the heat of battle one need only engage the spare.
