A Virginia rifle
« on: November 26, 2008, 02:31:23 AM »
After seeing Acer's, David's, Taylor's and others work posted here recently, I hesitate to post these, but here goes...

This is kinda my interpretation of an earlier Virginia rifle with a rounded toe.  I used one of the new Rice 46" barrels (C weight .54 cal.), Chambers lock, Dunlap wood, and Reeves trigger guard.  The butt piece is Dave's from Knob Mountain (excellent).  Hope you enjoy and as always, suggestions/observations are always welcome.  This rifle is going to be a Christmas present for a good friend.

VAirflegun,

A friend in need is a friend indeed.....and he is going to be a !@*%&@ happy one also this Christmas.

The rounded toe on the but plate is quite different but I liked it.   Nice job.

Splendid work.  The walnut gives the rifle a nice soft glow.  I like it very much.  And the initals "TS"  - I'll try to act surprised.

Looks good with the walnut. What did you use as a finish on the wood?

No Taylor - it's for Thomas - ME!!!!! althought I usually don't go by my middle name.  Yipeeeeeeee! - if it had been meant for you, it would have had DTS - obviously.  Doing it this way, was the only way Ed could make sure it was for me and not you - silly boy!  Oh yeah- I'll act surprised, Ed. Thanks a bunch - Imagine - me with a Ginny that's more accurate than Taylor's!

What "TS"?  Obviously just a sluring of the letters "BD".  You guys keep your cottenpicking hands off my present!   :D

Great job!  Somebody is going to be VERY happy!

It is easy to be intimidated by the work displayed here but you have no reason to keep this rifle under wraps.
I like it.

Like the drop at the wrist and the general styling. really good overall impression. I'll bet it's comfortable to hold.

Gents...  Thanks very much for the kind words.  The finish was done with Watco, which I've never done before.  I stained the rifle lightly, which I really don't like to do with walnut, then applied the Watco and sanded with 600 grit sandpaper.  You can't see it that well with my crappy pics, but it filled in the grain fairly well that way.

Also, the initials are "JS", sorry guys, LOL...

Oh, man, I just woke up and checked this post first. What a nice surprise, Ed, my good friend. Though if was supposed be a surprise Christmas present, you wouldn't have posted it on the web. A most beautiful rifle, Ed.

Now, there's a rifle!!! And, what a fine piece of work it is. Understated and beautiful. Thank you for overcoming your modesty and letting us see it.
