Screw Tip W/Threaded Collar
« on: January 28, 2012, 06:00:35 PM »
This one is after the top horn on page 146 in Grinslade’s Powder Horns Documents Of History. Aspects of it are attributed to others from the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia.
It is about 16” around the outside curve. The base is Walnut, hollowed out, with an applied strap knob of Beach. The tip is horn, the collar is attached to the horn with 4 steel pins. The collar rather than the horn is threaded 5/8-11.  Color on the horn is AF with Brown Shoe polish. As always questions and comments, good or bad, welcome.

Tim,

I have been a silent fan of your work for a while now, especially your banded horns,
and this horn is no exception.
Simple, clean of line, uncluttered with nice contrast between the body and plug and tip.

That is stylish- I like that one a lot. Thought I'd prefer the banded ones, but perhaps not.  The stark, plain, seemingly slimplistic horn with elaborate plugs both ends - quite elegant. I like.

Nice horn Tim,

Wanna hear something weird, I'm sitting in the basement with a horn on my lap that I just cut the top with a hole saw to make my take on the very same horn.  I just don't have any horn for the tip so I was going to make it from wood. Thanks Tim, now I'm gonna look like a copycat .(LOL)

Darn phone won't let me put a smiley face in.

That is a great looking horn, Tim.   Would you believe it is almost identical to an original that an old friend had.  I tried (unsuccessfully) for years to talk him out of it.

Sadly, my friend passed several years ago.  He had a small collection of horns, and when I approached his family about acquiring them I was told they had: "put all that old junk out to the trash."   :(

Reason to document everything. My wife isn't much interested, so I rely on photos, descriptions, and my daughter. ;D
