Pictures of ALR at Fort Boonesborough
« on: January 29, 2012, 08:46:53 AM »
We had about 20 ALR members attend our get-together today at Fort Boonesborough.  Here’s some pictures.

PTK brought 2 antiques, a ca. 1813 Harpers Ferry Model 1795 (top) and a ca. 1825 English shotgun (middle).  Bottom piece is a contemporary iron mounted longrifle by ALR member bgf.

Knives by Charlie W.  Boy's rifle by Jeff T.

Dan B brought a couple of very nice pistols.

Snaphaunce musket and flintlock pistol by Justin (Oddfellow).

Table by Justin.  Knives by his friend Josh.

Justin shows a couple of the beautiful wall shelves he makes.  This young man knows woodworking.

David R's kit.  Check out that axe head!

Nice finished rifle and another in progress by David R.

Jeff T. brought a rifle in progress and a boys rifle he made for his sons.

Jeff also brought his Airgraver set up for all to try out.

Rifle by G.T.

G.T. and I brought identical antigue wallets with the same machine tooling.  What are the chances?

Joey R brought 2 rifles by Indiana maker Marvin Kemper.

CVA make-overs by myself and by bgf.

Tooling I use to make screw-tip horns.

MikeC shows his horn and the tool he used to cut parallel bead moldings around the base of the horn.

Lunch at Hall's on the River.

Fort manager, Bill Farmer, demonstrates blacksmithing for a Boy Scout troop from Ohio who were visiting the fort.  During a break in the troop's scheduled program, we invited the Scouts and adult leaders to join us and talk about the long rifle, then and now.

Hats off to Fort Boonesborough!!  They are very gracious to us and a nod to Ron as well.  I know I speak for all who attended.  Thanks to Jeff T. for demo with the Lindsay engraving system.
Bill Farmer gave us the schedule of special events at the fort and any of us who can should really support them.  A lot of things going on throughout the year that really appeal to history buffs like us.

I agree Gary, hats off to Mr. Farmer and the Fort staff.  They really are putting on some great programs throughout the year.  And their support of ALR is greatly appreciated.

I owe an apology to Justin's friend Josh.  I got his name wrong in the earlier post.  @!*% my poor memory.  I may have forgotten their names, but not the meeting of these two young men.  I was surprised to learn they are just seniors in high school, yet they have a keen interest in the long rifle culture and the history of our state.  They are both very talented and are doing some great work.  In the past we've had discussions here on ALR about what's to become of our hobby, our sport, in the future.  Looks to me like it's in good hands.

I need to make another correction.

In the original post, I credited 2 rifles as being built by Joey R.  The 2 rifles were actually built by Indiana maker Marvin Kemper.  My apologies to Joey and Mr. Kemper.

I need to start writing things down.  Did I mention my poor memory?  Where did I put my pencil?

Looks like you all had a great time of it at Ft Boonsborough. I love going there and all three times that we attended the CLA show we made a point of stopping by to see both historic Ft Boonsborough and the re-created fort.

The two rifles underneath David R.'s kit are also his work, and very nice work as well -- he's probably too modest to claim them.  It was a lot of fun seeing everyone.  Thanks for organizing, Ron, and it is incredible that we get to do this at Ft. Boonesborough, so thanks to Bill Farmer also.

Absolutely great time with friends and the great hospitality of the folks at Boonesborough. I'm honored to have the opportunity to meet with good folks of the ALR forum and much thanks to Ron for his great effort. Joey.

A good time with some great people. I hate it that the pewter pour didn't turn out very well. I will blame the poor result on Ron since he put the dovetail in the barrel!
Thanks for puting things together Ron.

Charlie,

No problem, I'll take the blame.  I started trimming the excess pewter this afternoon and I think it's going to look better than you think.  The pewter didn't seem to stick to the barrel and I was able to clear the dovetail pretty easily.  Will have to rasp and file from here.  I'll post pictures later.

Thanks again for bringing all your tools and equipment for the demo.  I thought it went well.

Enjoyed the event. Worth the drive. Certainly appreciated Mr. Farmers hospitality and willingness to share his knowledge. I noticed he was forging with charcoal and asked a couple questions which imediately led to a show and tell right outside the fort wall where they had recently made the charcoal he was using and he carefully explained the process with enough historical background to tie it all together. I (and the scouts) I'm sure learned more in those few minutes than I could have learned from any book. Is the schedule of events at Boonesborough posted any where? I missed it. Thanks Ron and everyone who shared saturday.

The event was indeed a winner. Thank you Ron for doing all the leg work. The fort is a perfect stage for a gathering for people such as we. And I agree about the other events planned at Ft. Boonesborough...they all sound like they are worth a drive. I plan too.

Ron,

Thanks for your planning and organizing efforts.  It was a very enjoyable day, and the biggest gathering yet, I'd say!
Good to see some young blood there,  and it was great of you to include the scouts.  You may have planted a seed or two there.

Thanks also to everyone who came,  it was good seeing y'all and meeting a few new folks.

A BIG thank you! to Bill Farmer and the other staff at the Fort.

I've made yet another correction to my picture captions.....  I have correctly labeled the nice rifle and one in progress by David R.  Sorry Dave.

You guys give me way too much credit.  What makes this get-together so much fun is the people who come, and bring antiques and new pieces and projects and tools and freely share their skills.  So I want to say thanks to everyone who came to the Fort and made the day a great one.

Oh, and a big thank you to all who dropped something in the donation can.  We collected $40 for the Fort Boonesborough Foundation.  Here's a link to their site http://www.fortboonesboroughlivinghistory.org/
