Squirrel Hunt

Got sent home from work early, so went squirrel hunting.  Saw only one but my 32 Cal Dennis Priddy rifle made meat.  30 grains of fffg and a 311 ball, .020 patch with shenandoah valley lube.

He sure makes a prety rifle doesn't he. I'm trying to figure just who you are. Did you make it to Eaton Rapids last sat? I was there and spoke to the members about Over the log Shooting . Hope to cross trails someday. Was going to go over to Sand Lake this coming week-end but have another duty to take care of . Trapper John invited me. You going over ?

nice shot on the squirrel. Being that it was black and so large I had to do a double take to make sure that was a squirrel.
I have not seen very many black squirrels down here in ohio. I did see some in town about 15 years ago and I think I saw one that was mostly black in the woods, but very few.
Cool picture and nice looking rifle.

Here in the PNW we only shoot squirrels to keep them out of the bird feeders! Then we
feed them to the cats. The sled dogs like them too, but would RATHER catch their own!
EAT them? I don't think so Tim! ???

I have thought for many years that a squirrel is a rat designed by the Disney organization. I take them out of the back yard oak tree and on the ground with an old Remington single shot bolt action using subsonic ammo.

Beautiful rifle!

The muzzle loader does a much better job with blunt force trauma than a bow and arrow.  I just can't use the blunt force trauma in the back yard.  Too Many neighbors! ;D

The greys, blacks and fox squirrels are just fine eating, Dogshirt.  If you've sled dogs, you've probably got pine squirrels, red squirrels or whatever you'd like to call those tiny chattering little vermin.  Here in BC, only trappers can take them as they are considered fur bearing (of all things) and eating one would be like eating a green spruce cone- just chawin' down - or maybe chewing on ahandful of pine needles. - not for me either. 

On the other hand, the blacks greys and fox squirrels are dandy eating - expecially cooked up, deboned, combined with left over ruffed grouse meat or tender young Eastern woodchuck and made into a block of head cheese with geletin for sandwiches - yummy!

It looks like the skunks we have here. ???  Our squirrels are grey or grey with reddish tinges.

Eat 'em?  I don't but would sooner eat a squirrel than a 'possum or 'coon.

BTW, nice lookin' rifle.  How about more pictures of the rifle?

That is an exceptionally fine looking rifle.  That squirrel sure looks huge.  Back down in Ga we had lots of fox squirrels in a number of color variations: solid black, standard, white and silver.  I've never seen a totally black squirrel other than the black fox variety.  Does this one represent a separate species from grays & foxes?

In Northern MN I am seeing more and more black variations of the greys like the one pictured. Funny thing about eating squirrel.  In my area people consider them like rats and many do not eat them.  You go further south and they are a common game animal and considered fine table fare.  My daughter did not believe me when I told she has eaten squirrel.  I hide it in chicken casseroles.

It is loaded with black squirrels here in Western Michigan.  They are technically a melaninistic (SP) version of the grey squirrel.  If I looked out back there are probably half a dozen on my bird feeder, but I don't shoot them as the mayor wouldn't appreciate it, nor my wife, kids, or grand kids.

It sounds like you need something quiet to dispatch the bird feeder raiders.

Very nice rifle, I had to do a double take, looked like a stripe less skunk. We have gray and fox squirrels around here and I would have to say it's the finest meat in the woods.

I usually cook the squirrel in a crockpot for about 6-8 hours on low with onions, pepper and creole seasoning.  Then let cool and debone.  Put back in the broth and cook with noodles or what ever.  Just like a dark meat chicken.    They will never know the differnce, at least my co-workers didn't until after I said something.  They didn't know whether to say it tasted good or run to the bathroom. ;)

We never had anything but fox squirrels around this are until a few years ago.Then suddenly a small squirrel about the size of a grey squirrel with tuffs of hair in its ears and being coal black in color started appearing around town.They quickly mated with the fox squirrels and are now much larger in size.They should be just as fun to hunt, and increase the targets for our smoke poles.

Its funny how some people loathe the little squirrel, in the forest, living high and mighty in the tops of trees, foraging on nuts, they compare them to rats and commemt "EAT THEM???NEVER!!!!!!!!! Have you ever been to a pig farm or chicken ranch??? Smelly disgusting, and filthy are just a few of the words that come to mind,,,,eat THEM????

Hey Cahil, minute I saw that "dark" one I had a feeling you were from West MI.  I'm in Holland (almost in Saugatuck) and I am covered up in those buggers too.  Nice shooting and gorgeous 32.
