« on: February 12, 2012, 08:30:05 AM »
Been working on a rifle and finnished inleting lock and triggers using inletting black again. Is there any best way to clean the inletting black off of the parts and hands?                                Smylee

Is it a petroleum product?  If so, maybe acetone.

Do not put acetone on your hands!  If it is petroleum based use some cooking and dish soap or get a 2 dollar tub of mechanics hand cleaner.

I just use antibacterial handsoap from a dispenser and an old tooth brush!

WD-40 is a penetrant. It goes thru the skin into your system. Acetone, MEK, even alcohol, direct skin contact should be avoided.

I have been cleaning various metal parts lately by soaking them in a real strong solution of powdered dishwasher detergent and boiling hot water.  Of course if you want to live dangerously, you could put them in a wire or mesh basket and just run them through the dishwasher :D

For cleaning the parts I use any of the spray degreasers (Gun Scrubber, Krudcutter, etc), and soap and water or greaseless hand cleaner for my hands. I'll echo what everyone has said about avoiding skin contact with any of the strong solvents. I keep a box of the disposable nitrile gloves in the shop to wear whenever I'm messing with them. It's what works for me.

Super Clean by Castrol.  A degreaser purchased from Napa.  Spray on and wash off with warm water and a tooth brush.  Use it for degreasing barrels for browning, etc.  You can mix it to various strengths.  Great product.

Wipe off as much as you can with a paper towel, then use Dawn dishwashing detergent and water. Just cleaned up my buttplate a few hours ago.

Denatured alcohol for me! Wipes it clean, evaporates fast, lets me know that the wounds recieved inletting are sterilized, and cleans the wood well too.

Use lampblack for inletting color. It washes off with soap & water.

I have used the erasable black magic marker a few times and it cleans up easily, but I still prefer inletting black.
