Nose Cap to stock taper?
« on: February 19, 2012, 05:46:03 AM »
Could someone please help me with some pictures on the foremost stock carve from the end cap to the first ramrod thimble.
I need a little help with the taper as this is my first build and I have quite a bit of wood to lose.
This is a pre carve Dickert form Pecatonica .
Thank you , Dennis

First off is the project using a swamped barrel or a straight barrel? I tend to a low the barrel determining the flow of things to a certain extent.  What type of muzzle cap did they include with the Kit? The thickness of the sides of the forestock are determined by the thickness that the muzzle cap shape allows to show. I blend back into the rest of the fore stock using the muzzle cap as the starting poing and work back. If you have a swamped barrel the rear end of the muzzle cap must be squished to keep the sides  snug on the barrel following its taper. I then blend the wood in paralleling the the barrel profile to match.

I was checking my RCA 1 and they only have a few shots of the rifles by Dickert muzzle caps. They are short by most of the caps you see. They are about 1 5/8" long and the distance from the end of the stock to cap joint to the first rod pipe is not quite 2".  There is a good shot of the under side of the cap and the molding finial detail that is covered by the ramrod normally but is clear for a good look at the architecture of this not too often seen area. No shots from the top looking down on to the front site view on the transition area. Here are my thoughts in picture how I am progressing on the finishing of the muzzle cap area to the first rod pipe.
The barrel is a Colraine in the golgen age 42"

Here is an orignial muzzle cap that more closely resembles what the Dickert muzzle cap tends to look like

I know this is too long of a muzzle cap for the early Dickert's but if the cap were shortened by a half inch and the rest moved up towards the front to match it would be correct.

Thanks For the pics Dave.
My nose cap is the low silhouette which leaves more wood to be removed.
I have RCA also and am trying to use it but like you say those pics are not the best.
The top picture on page 215 is what mine is going to come out like I guess and that will be ok.
I'll just make the transition as flowing as possible.
Can you see any incised moulding above the ramrod along the length  of these Dickert stocks , if
So I might use some if they were original.
Thanks for your help , Dennis

From what I've found, on 1785/1800 Dickert rifles, several have two parallel incised lines along the length of the forearm. They're cut pretty shallow and narrow. Not near as deep as the original rifle that Dave B showed. They're located in about the same place as that rifle has them, about in line with the ramrod thimble pins and a bit below the barrel pins.

Again from talking with owners and such, the muzzle cap is made in two pieces with the front end soldered on, and is held in place on the stock with one rivit, under the ramrod. At least one original rifle has what you might call a low profile cap, with a half round section in it to fit the ramrod. Although it's more like a quarter to a third of a circle, instead of a full half circle.

Thanks John , I'm need to follow his earlier rifles Pre Rev. or Transitional as my ancestors would have used those with Morgans men. The nose cap I received dosnt really seem to fit the pics I've seen but
I'm just doing the best I can. Dennis
