"A New Beastie"

Rather pale photos and don't know why.  My latest effort shes a 50 gr Mt cut back to 38 in rather than my 'normal/' 39 1/2     To have a tad lighter offhander.  Yes, I know - the iron ferule end of the rod belongs 'in' the rifle.  Will fix that.  That threaded end of the frt bolt has been cut back flush and browned.  The different sized bolt head have been evened up.   She has P P in low spots plus the Nitric and heat (killed later) Maple stain rubbed out some in high (wear) areas and 5 or some such rubbed in coats of leaded B linseed.  So, please find and advise any other warts on her you can find.... ;D  Later post under 'shooting' shows first sighting in process at 30 yds rest.  More this afternoon God willing. 

Now, at my age do I build more?  Attic floor is sagging now..... ::)

Very very nice work.  Buy why consider quitting now?
 life isn't a 5 o'clock job.  In fact some folk believe that you can't "go home" 'til all the work is done.  So look at projects to be done as "life assurance" ;)

Beautiful Beasty!  What is "P P" and could you explain what you mean by "killed"?


How does the Linseed hold up to weather?  Prop up the attic and keep building ;)

Roger thats a a fine rifle even if it is a "cussin" gun!!!  Hey, what do you mean do you stop???  I can't wait to see the next one!!!  You haven't got it started yet????

finn, dont have a clue what PP is, but assume "killing" is refering to neutralizing the acid,   mark

Nitric acid + heat ( don't catch it a fire ) pops the curl.  P.P = Potassium Permanganate dark in the low spots to show a little wear after rubbing the Maple stain out some in the wear areas.  . Note the term 'leaded boiled linseed' oil.  This stuff does dry (better in winter if stacked behind the wood stove but not tooo close)  Depends on the weather.  There is better stuff to shed water.  Better minds than  mine would answer that one.  Oh yes, 'killed' means kill the working acid with baking soda and water.  Beware using 'old' box of baking soda.  Splurge on a fresh box.  (Been there).

I have heard of using potassium permanganate to finish a stock.  Not with nitric acid and stain.  Thanks for replying to my questions.  I think you have a winner recipe with that finish.
  I use a really old bottle of Archer Midland Daniels linseed oil and it dries quickly as you described.  Usually after hunting season is over I clean it really good and put another coat on it.
