« on: March 10, 2012, 03:46:09 AM »
Bought a new gun today from the 1800s beautiful brass patch box has alot of patina on it,i've heard some people say it hurts the value of the gun to shine the brass and remove the patina.would appreciate any input on this subject .

Leave it on there....Even if you may like a bright gun, the guy you may want to sell it to( if you ever do) probably won't. I like to see a bright one once in awhile, because that is how they probably looked when they was in use. However most collectors would not take real patina off of a antique longrifle. Probably like taking icing off the cake!

Have to agree with the above comments. It is best to leave it dark; many collectors feel the darker the better. I have some rifles with so much crud on the brass that it obscures the engraving beneath. And, I intend to leave things that way. Attic/closet rifles in 'as found' condition tend to bring more money on a sale than do the shiny cleaned guns. I will buy a shiny rifle only if I feel that it can be crudded up again, and made to look as it should for its scores of years of use and then sitting around. So, your gun, your choice! Just my $.02.

Be glad to offer you $.25 on the dollar of your original investment after you clean it up.  HIB
