More Shot/Powder Measure, New Pics

Had reason to venture out to the Labooritory today and do a bit of work on the wifes rifle,
 
took a break from that and built a prototype powder/shot measure.
 
Its made from elk antler and ebony wood.

It is 3 1/8" overall length with the antler portion just shy of 1 7/8", it is 3/4" outside diameter with a 5/8" cylinder bore hole just at 1 3/8" deep.
 
The antler was drilled and tapped and the ebony was done with the corresponding die, no glue or other modern chemicals were used it the making.
 
Bees Wax was used as a polish and sealer.

When tapping horn/bone/antler, what manner of taps are used? Are they the ones for wood, or ones for metal?

 Nice work, Well done.

 For threading I use the same taps and dies that are used for metal, tapered and bottom.

Thanks for the compliments, I used 1/2"-13 NC tap and die for this measure.

Found it very challenging to cut the threads in the ebony with the die, the antler tapped well, just go slow with it.

Next one I may try to tap the ebony and use the die on the antler and see how it goes.

What kind of cutting tools do you need to turn antler.  Do the regular ones I use for turning
wood work?  Or do I need a harder steel?  Thanks

Yes,

Just regular turning tools, I don't even use any specialty scrapers for this. All resharpened over the counter turning tools.

Here are a few pictures of the first shot measure as well as a few more.
 
In the first picture they are, from left to right,

Osage Orange 1 5/8 oz
 Teak 1 1/2 oz
 Ebony 1 3/8 oz
 Ebony 1 1/8 oz
 
The Osage and Teak both required glue for an added measure of holding power, the wood just does not cut well enough to rely on thread engagement alone.
 
Will probably get rid of the three larger measures as I have no need to launch that much shot.
