Wonderful Fowler bag.
« on: March 25, 2012, 02:37:37 AM »
At the Kalamazoo Gun show last weekend,I came across a huge bunch of deals from a trader there who was liquidating an eastate. This bag was one of the item's I picked up. It has an irish chsarger head built into the flap and hold's@ 1-1/2 lbs of shot. It's a double bag with a compartment between the two. It also has a pocket on the flap, front of the first compartment, back of the second cpmpartment and a hanging pocket for a total of 7,yes 7 pockets, and belive it or not,it isn't bulky at all!

It's7-1/2X10 and the flap is 9-1/2X9-1/2. I've been making bag's for @ 25 years and  I have never seen one as nice AND usefull as this one. Does anyone have an idea who madethis? It's machine stitched and HIGH qualitythrough out!

I just looked at the post and I guess I need to learn how this machine better!

Too clever by half. I'd be curious about having to lift the pound-and-a-half-plus flap every time you need something from the bag. It's pretty, but would soon become a wall-hanger for me.

Holy Cow!  I'd love to see the hunter that dragged this one about all day (unless duck hunting from a blind) with a pound of shot plus all the other heavy junk that will end up in this bag just to 'fill up' all the space (more pockets than a pair of Wranglers)  Yepper, Dr Tim you hit the nail on the head, the original user surely lists to the side now and leaves odd looking footprints.   And yes Kermit, what a wall hanger it tis sir.
And look, no welting on this pouch either, but does have the 'traditional' pillow ticking lining.   :o :o ;D ;D

It HOLD'S a pound and a half,I took it out the other day"hunting" with 6 load's of shot and 15 ball's with all the usual stuff I carry in my fowler bag's and it was very comfortable! The strap is jute webbing folded over a blue wool center and super soft and easy on the shoulder. I'll not let the lack of welting detract from the top drawer quality of this bag! Guess you need to see it in person.

Pathfinder,
That's quite a bag but like the oyher fellows, probably weighs a short ton. I have one that also uses the flap for a shot pouch, with an Irish charger, but the whole thing is a lot smaller and, for me, more manageable.

I've looked at many a original bag and and most don't have welting or a lining

With all those pockets I'm afraid I'd be tempted to fill them up with stuff I don't need

Speedy Hogarth used to make some multipocket bags that held everything you would ever need in the 80's maybe its one of his

Thank's Joe! it's obviouse that this isn't the first bag that was made by this person. It is a temptation to fill EVERY nook and cranny, but using restraint,it's a very orginized bag,and I am NOT an orginized guy! I can keep flint's,mould and ladle, ball, shot stuff and "tool's" in their seperate area's. Feel's kinda good to have an OCD bag!

I'm heading out this afternoon for a 5 mile trekk, and I'll stop by my butcher's and weigh this rig with a fresh load of stuff.

Didn't have a chance to wiegh the bag,so let me just say that it worked very well! We have a Trade gun Round Robin here in So. east Mich,it involves 6 club's who take turns hosting the match. We shoot between 10-15 shot's,4 bird's,hawk, knife and fire starting. I used this bag for the first time in a wood's walk and I LOVE IT! I dont need to get into the bag once we start shooting. The patching hang's on the strap off the short starter[yes i know, not p/c-h/c,tight fit=accuracy, using a Pedersolli Northwest trade gun that i'm still dialing in,may cone the barrel and am definetly working the stock down to a more authentic style!],and the little pocket above the shot charger hold's 20 ball's and I prime from the main horn.

I also have evolved my belt bag recently too. I used to carry a ladle and mould in each bag, along with a ball puller and worm. I just made a smaller type double bag for a belt pouch and now I keep only the mould for the gun in the shooting bag and keep the other tool's in the back pouch on my belt. I'll see how this set up work's out,I'm sure it'll change again......SOON!

I have a Speedy Hogarth bag with a small pocket in the front under the flap, a large pocket and a small pocket sewn on the inside of the back with a 6 flint pocket even behind that. Use it with my fowling piece. holds everything...... But I am making a shot snake to get the shot out of the bag.
