I do envy you your forge.

May I comment, as a retired metallurgist?

Whenever you forge steel, any steel, the forging ends up with some very coarse grained areas, and some finer areas. Your forged Widget will be tougher if you do just a simple heat treatment after forging. Heat the forging a nice red color, say 1650F, and simply let it air cool. This will refine the grains & make the thing tougher.

If you are forging a high carbon steel, say 1095, for an axe blade or knife it is even more important to refine that forged grain just a bit, before you harden & temper it. For the high carbon steel, heat it red (not orange!), say 1450 to 1650F range, and bury it in old ashes or lime to cool slowly. I.e., anneal the thing. Then finish shaping it, harden & temper.

There is more but just heating that forging red and air cooling it, or slow cooling it, will go a long way toward making a better Widget.  I established my reputation at my 1st job out of college, with this simple bit of Book Larnin'. Forgings heat treated My Way worked, the normal stuff broke & cut the bosses' finger. Got his attention.
