RCA #28 Puzzlement ?????

I am studying #28 in RCA. Looking at picture #f.28i, the protrusion in front of the trigger appears to be the tang bolt sticking out, or is it?

I thought so. That is a wonderment! Why do you think they left it like that?

Eric
While there is no way of knowing for sure , a couple of possibilities are 1)wood shrinkage has made it protrude more than when first installed.2) It's not the original tang screw and was replaced by someone too lazy to shorten it
I'm sure there are other possibilities.

I have not seen another like it, yet. Perhaps I was was too careless in my observation of other rifles in the RCA and other references. That is one butt ugly patchbox.

Actually I'm kinda fond of it right down to the different size screw heads

I had this thing photo copied and sized for dimension to make a pattern for future reading rifles. Im just getting started. Doesnt exactly fit the Haga buttplate I have from Goehring but I am wrestling with that.

Hi,
There are a lot of old guns with extra tang bolt showing. It might be shrinkage or they are replacements but also the old-time gunmakers were not as anal as we are about things like that.
