Bound edge on pouch flap
« on: April 25, 2012, 05:53:01 AM »
Anyone care to share their technique for sewing a binding to the edge of a pouch flap?

I've been working with leather for a a good many years, but I've yet to sew a flap edging that
I find acceptable.

Any and all advice will be greatly appreciated.

depends on what type of leather you are using for the edging
If it is a garment weight or brain tan
I  glue it down first with an Elmer's glue stick
then use a stitching wheel to space the holes

If your edging  leather is real stiff then wet it first and shape it to fit
You can sew it down wet

I've only done a few, but I use an edge piece wider than what the final product will have and trim the width after it is sewn on.

Draken  the best way ive found to do bound edges is to wet the leather ,roll the edge under ,punch your holes and stich from the middle and work towards the top. or cut your strip. for the edging.wet it fold it form it ,then sticth it.if your doin a rustic bag line the flap with linen and do a whip stitch. hope this makes sence. I'VE FOUND THAT IF YOU WET THE BINDING AND THE BAG THE NEEDLE SEEMS TO PULL ALOT SMOOTHER AS WELL
