May 2012 Turkey match, Cody, Wyoming

Gentlemen,

Mr. Phariss came down from Montana and gave us all a lesson in spider killing with his new flintlock chunk rifle. He won eight of ten matches, the aggregate and most turkeys; and this in very challenging (windy) conditions. Three spiders and the first four shots could have been covered by a quarter. Impressive shooting to say the least.

We also shot the "live" turkey match and I have to say this is the best of fun. Short of having a real bird behind the log, this is really a challenging match. More challenging when you have rain and sleet to contend with. We made it to the second "3-second" round with Wilson Crawford pulling the rope.

Here are the strings-

Dan Phariss- 4.087" 10 turkeys- .50 flintlock
Steve Garbe- 11.167" 9 turkeys- .45 flintlock
Robbie Robinson- 11.242" 6 turkeys- .40 percussion
George Marcum- 17.458" 5 turkeys- .45 percussion
Ron Gerondale- 18.395" 8 turkeys- .54 percussion
Jim Betters- 24.646" 4 turkeys- .54 percussion
Bob Jam- 31.839" 6 Turkeys- .54 percussion
Wilson Crawford- 41.224" 4 turkeys- .50 percussion

Live turkey match (2 rounds) - Steve Garbe

A more detailed equipment list will be forthcoming.

Needless to say, in spite of windy and wet conditions, a good time was had by all. Now we all have a month to conspire on ending Dan's reign of terror...

Photos of the usual suspects at Cody

Had to do 2 group photos to get a photo of everyone, did not have tripod.

SPG and his (very) dead turkey

BTW Steve and I tied on the "Turkeys" count as you can see by target 5 but short string is the tie breaker.

Mark,

60 yards from the plank or 40 yards offhand. We shot from the plank although I think next match I will do the offhand distance with the .40 Bedford.

The live turkey match is from 60 yards. 5 seconds to shoot for the first bird, 3 seconds for the second, 2 seconds for the third. We haven't gone to a third round yet but I look forward to it.

In the painting note the guy to the right with the cigar appears to have a tube sight or scope.

In looking closer, I can see many of the same characters in the painting that currently show up in Cody.

The more things change, the more they stay the same.

Looks like a ball boys!

By the way, which one is Mr. Phariss in the group pics? (Nice shooting, Sir)!

Best regards, Skychief.

I am the one holding two rifles so Robby can run the camera.
Thanks for the compliment. Even a blind hog finds an acorn now and then.
This is not an easy match.

The McLemore  barrel is apparently capable of shooting through the same hole at this distance.
My hat is off the Jim McLemore. We have a number of these barrels between 3 of us. This is the first one in service. But all of them are extremely well made and very uniform in the bore end to end. Plus they are made of 4150.

Way to go, guys, Dan and Steve.  Terrific competition - what a string, Dan - WOW - talk about setting the bar high at 4.087".

Way to go, guys.  One of these years, I feel another trip South of Alberta is in order.
