Interesting 'PA' Longrifle on Website

Hi Guys,

While nosing around the web-world, I came across a longrifle on this website:

He has a number of firearms and other things for sale, but one item really caught my eye is listed as a Rev. War American Longrifle. Once you get to the front page of his site go to the "For Sale" page. Don't go to the "Firearms" listing, but to the "Sold" listings at the bottom. On page 6 the rifle is shown. It's a .54 cal., 46 inch barrel very plain rifle with a really interesting rear flip sight that I've never seen before; maybe some of you guys are familiar with this type.

I think that's surely a German gun.  I would love to see a wood species test on that because you can't always determine Euro vs. American walnut by eye.

I wonder if the long 46" barrel length has anything to do with this piece being classified as American?

Looking at the barrel stamping along with the early Euro type rear sight and overall Germanic styling, I'd agree with Eric about it being a continental piece.   If the stock wood was tested and results proved to be American Black Walnut, then and only then would I agree with the write up.

That is a neat old rifle!  Am I seeing things , or in the close up of the lock , does it look like a faint circle around the touch hole?As if it had been plugged and redrilled ?  And , the barrel  metal in front of the frizzen , looks rougher than right above the touch hole . To be such an old rifle all the visible lock screws are almost perfect , with some "blueing" remaining on the frizzen screw?  I like the old piece , but I would still be suspect , of a few things. Great looking smooth rifle. Lots to want to emulate there.  Love the rise of the breech and the sight,  plus the cool spot for patches in the patchbox cavity.

Very cool rifle, interesting "hard" swamp the last 2" of barrel near breech.

The rear sight, and the cartouche, would be unlikely on an American rifle unless it was made from recycled parts. If it were mine having the wood  tested for origin would be a no brainer. I do like the overall look of the gun, and love the simplicity of the wooden box.
