southern mountain patchbox
« on: May 21, 2012, 12:14:39 AM »
I am building a southern mountain rifle and I am thinking about a patchbox for it. It seems like most of them I see have a bean or banana style on them. Were there any other styles that could be used? My rifle really isn't a tenn. ,it has a little flatter buttplate and a spoonbill trigger guard. Its probably more of a mix but I think it will make a good hunting rifle.Got the parts and stock from Randy [the other tvm]. I built a patchbox for it that is a simple single hinge style that goes all the way to the buttplate but I'm not sure if it would be right. Any advice or pics would be appreciated. Thanks Dew

Earlier iron patchboxes were not that much different from their brass counterparts, and you could have 2 piece (e.g. Bogle) w/o sideplates, 4 piece (with sideplates), captured lid, or one like Dr. Tim shows.  If you do 4 piece or captured lid in iron, my preference is to keep shape simple (maybe following the "geometric" types), little or better no engraving, possibly a little file-work, although there are a few examples of iron patchboxes with more engraving and even silver inlays.

Dew, you can find several interpretations of early iron mounted southern rifles on the contemporary makers blog.

here is a link to one of mine with a simple patch box http://contemporarymakers.blogspot.com/2011/05/watauga-rifle-by-heinz-ahlers.html

Jim Hash has a very nice iron mounted rifle posted about 3 days ago

Thanks for the replies. Heinz, the box that is on your rifle looks similar to the first one I made but I think mine looks bigger than yours. I might try to slim it down alittle more.  Tim, I really like the one you showed me. Inspiration has struck and I,m trying to make a similar one and I'll see which one I like better on my rifle. Thanks,Dew

Dew, my patchbox is an the small side because the figure in the butt grain is in the patchbox area.  It does not show well in the photos but it was worth using a little smaller box.
