fake powder horn
« on: May 23, 2012, 04:32:07 PM »
I have an 1842 Springfield Musket that I am reworking for my SIL.
Due to massive bore pitting it will always be a wall hanger without a complete barrel change.
I think he only wants it for a wall hanger anyway.
My idea is to give him a powder horn and a bullet bag to hang on the wall with it which is the reason for the title.
Do they ( anyone ) make such a product?

You can find very cheap powder horns and any national park sight gift store or online.  They are not "fake" though.

Could the barrel be bored and sleeved?

The 1842 barrels were heavier than the 69' cal muskets before them, with enough material for rifling after the minnies came out.  It was THE rifled musket of it's day, more accurate when rifled and shooting the 730gr. Minnie with 70gr. powder, than-were the .58's it bolstered the numbers of, in the armories.

Sleeving back to .69 would not probably work due to the thickness of the barrel and liner. It could, however be sleeved to a smaller size & quite easily perhaps to say .50 and maybe .58?

I suppose a guy could build one, but if you just want a horn that can't be used, buy a powder horn, toss in a couple of mothballs, and epoxy the spout plug in place.
