What are the features to look for in a drill press for building longrifles and what is a good brand /model?

Grab the chuck and check to make shure there is no spindle slop side to side.

No slop in the spindle bearing, a quality chuck and a range of speeds....I use a 1/16" drill a lot and the preferred RPM is 1350. My drill press has 8 speeds w/ a range of 350-8550 RPMs. The higher RPMs are suitable for polishing. Mine is a free standing Craftsman .....Fred

You want about a 5" spindle stroke, and an elevating/positionable table. Either bench or floor model will work. I prefer the floor model, as it doesn't take up valuable bench space, and the rifle can be tipped without restriction, to drill a tang bolts, for example.

I've had a Grizzly table model now for about forty years and had no problems with it at all. It'll do what ever I ask of it, weather it is polishing at high speeds, or boring at lower speeds. Make sure you get a keyed chuck, and for around $80.00 or so extra, get a cross slide vice to go with it.
