Dueling Pistols
« on: June 08, 2012, 04:47:54 AM »
Anyone have experience making dueling pistols? Profiles, pictures, tutorials, whatever, maybe references? I am interested in the Andrew Jackson duel?

Any particular duel of Jackson's?  He had many.  Here are two, including the famous one with Charles Dickinson.

Dave, I have seen those threads. I didnt comment because they were dated, but I will now take the opportunity to tell you what a fine job you did. I loved it.
I thought maybe Jackson's dueling pistols might be in a museum somewhere. I can't seem to find a decent link to actual photos of theme. Maybe they were never kept for posterity.

Chris, those are unusual pistols for that era, not at all what I thought Jackson's duelers would look like.

I would have thought something more "traditional" than the set in the link.  That set has the saw handle style grip which, if memory serves, came into vogue just after the turn of the 19th century.  I am pretty sure Egg made some of this design.  I am partial to Wogdons myself.  ;D

A sad day when dueling was outlawed. It provided for a measure of civility in discussion, not to mention clarity of thought.

If dueling were practiced today the world would be more civilized believe it or not.

Duelling is now no longer illegal in Queensland  and maybe a couple of other states in Australia, apparently these old laws are coming off the statutes. !!
My mother allways wanted to give me a cased set of duelling pistols for my 21st, as she felt all young gentlemen should still have them.

Cheers

Definately!   Not to mention fewer Lawsuits, need for fewer lawyers, and and the possibility of a few more honest politicians.   (They are so few)

I remember that a pistol was found in a excavation of an old outhouse at the Hermitage but I couldn't find a link to it. Probably a pocket pistol and not a dueling pistol though. One must be careful when pulling ones pants up in the outhouse. I wonder what the President said when that happened.

I visited the Hermitage in I think it was 1984.  They showed each tour a flintlock belt pistol that was found in the rafters of I think it was the separate kitchen when we went through there?  The Tour Guide reached up, as the rafters were only just over 6 feet and I was crouching the entire time we were in there, and pulled it down to show us.  Our tour guide informed us that was where it had been found where it had lain for well over a century and a half they guessed..

It was definitely not a dueling pistol, but a rather plain belt pistol.  .The wood was dried out with not much finish and I think it had a plain brass butt cap without the earlier stems going up the grip, though that may not be right as she showed it so quickly and then put it back and that was more than a quarter of a century ago..  She did not turn the barrel towards us, so I don’t know if it was rifled or not.  I almost begged to look at it, but she said their policy was that no guest was allowed to examine it, even though she used her bare hands to handle it as did the other tour guides.  I’m really sorry I could not examine it closely and we only got to see it for not even a minute before she put it back. .

The thing I remember the most about the Hermitage was the bed with the four HUMONGOUS posters that looked like they had been cut from the trunks of mature walnut trees and barely turned down at all.  That and the doors and so many of the interior woodwork that was artificially “grained” by a Frenchman that General Jackson hired to come from France and do it  before he was elected President.

I really have to get up there and tour The Hermitage. It's definately on my bucket list. Jackson is my favorite president almost, George Washington being firtst, and Thomas Jefferson third. All three were farmers. Imagine!

If anyone has any really high quality photos of dueling pistols that are antique and historically used in famous/inf.amous duels, please post them here. I would like to add them to my files.

Hi,
Check out the www.flintlockcollection.com.  They have many high quality dueling pistols. However, they are not usually identified with famous duels.  Nonetheless, they clearly show the styles used in high quality dueling pistols.

Here is a pair of pistols, not specifically dueling pistols, but mid 18th c English gentleman's pistols.  They are newly made and 20 gauge smoothbore.  maybe someday when I get a round tuit they will be in a cased set.

Saw handle duelers became quite popular with people like Jackson, who seemed to find themselves in need of defending their honor on a regular basis. The  Church pistols used in the Hamilton, Burr, duel were Wogdon's with saw handles. Many of the fancy heavily decorated cased pistol sets were not technically duelers, but were presentation sets.
The age of dueling had two grand effects, it thinned out the lawyers, and the politicians. Always a good thing IMHO.
