ramrod thimble swage block

What is the best way to obtain or make a swage block to make thimbles?

I will use a block of lead to pound into, or carve what I want out of maple endgrain.

The swage is made from a piece of oak in my case, but any hardwood should do. And as Acer said, beat into the endgrain.
