buck skin finish
« on: July 08, 2012, 07:14:42 PM »
Any suggestions on removeing the hair side surface on commercial tanned buck skin to give a finish that looks more like brain tanned hide? I've spent a fair amount of time scraping on one over my knee with a knife edge and a flint scraper and I'm pleased with the look and feel of it but hoped others have messed with this and found better ways.
A clear conscience is usually the sign of a bad memory.

A file card works pretty well.

I used a sanding block once.  But once I started paying myself my normal hourly rate, for sanding commercial tan,  it was cheaper to just buy braintan ;D

Tack it to a sheet of plywood, hit it with an 80 grit belt on a belt sander.  Helps if you're careful to keep the sander moving.

I used a wire wheel on a drill and it worked great. I think the wire wheel cost me $3.95 at kragen auto parts and maybe an hour and a half of my time.
