single band horn
« on: July 15, 2012, 02:19:16 AM »
This horn was done with a single band, applied antler tip both with three pins. it is about 14 ins. around the curve and 2 1/2ins. at the base. It was dyed with a mixture of brown and yellow Rit dye and finished with just a light coat of paste wax.
Any and all critique is appreciated, thats the way I learn.

Nice looking horn, good choice of raw material. Is the tip a two piece? I would have cut the peak off the finial flattened it out some and rounded it over. Nice job.

Thanks James.
Tim,  the tip is one piece and I guess I got a little carried away on the base. It should have been a little plainer. Thanks for the comments.

Ron, as usual, your fine craftsmanship shines through and a fine looking powder horn.  What kind of wood did you use for your butt plug?   And I agree with Tim regarding the style of the base, a little 'fancy' for the style of powder horn, but still a fine job Ron.

Thanks Gary. The wood is elm. I really need to get some more pieces of different kinds of wood so that I will have a better selection.

Ron, I like your work.  Did you use a texturing tool on the wood?
The elm looks like blackwalnut, I know elm is harder.  :) Tim

Woodburner, this piece of elm came out of Wisconsin about 10 yrs ago. It had quite a bit of stripping in it and I am still trying to figure out the best stain to use to accent the figure in the wood. The hardness that you mentioned really helps when you are turning it but it hurts when it comes to staining.
