Wounded Warrior Rifle
« on: July 25, 2012, 04:39:30 AM »
This is a piece I built for the Wounded Warrior Program, and will be used in the "Hunts for Healing".  This project was coordinated through Bill D, who is also building a couple rifles for the program.

I'd like to thank the following folks for their most generous contibutions to this project:

Wayne Dunlap:   donated the stock blank
Dave Keck:   inlet the barrel, drilled the ram rod hole, and shaped the butt stock
Richard DeOrian:  donated the lock
Charles Burton:  donated the barrel (nice!)
Larry Luck:  gave me the idea for the original purple heart design on the cheek

The barrel is a 38", .54 cal that was cold blued then rubbed back.  The butt piece is a #12 Dickert by Reeves.  The trigger guard, ram rod pipes and side plate are commercial pieces I had lying around the shop.  The patch box is a simple one piece design, made from a commercial blank, again been lying around for a while.  Not a whole lot of bells and whistles on this one.  I wanted to keep it simple, and tie in some period military aspects.  As mentioned, the heart shaped inlay on the cheek is from the original purple heart, conceived by G. Washington in 1782 or '83.  The medal was originally awarded for merit, and has since evolved into the present day purple heart.  The patch box incorporates the coiled snake of the Gadston (sp?) flag, and has the initials of the five service branches engraved around it.  Critiques are certainly welcome.

I'll be giving the rifle to Bill at Dixon's.  It'll be on display either at Dave Kecks table, or up on the hill with the folks from ALR.

Ed,

That is some beautiful work there!  And I have to echo the thoughts on it being for a very worthy cause.  Very simple and clean lines, it really captures the feeling.  All who contributed should be commended as well!

Nice job on the carving also.

Ed, you will touch the hearts of some folks who need it. A beautiful offering. I think it is a wonderful rifle....makes me even prouder to know you.

Course you could have engraved the Senior service -- USA at the top instead of the USMC... the junior service!!  :o ;D ;D

I thought almost the same thing....almost being USN up top of course ;D....but then realized he had 3 services with 4 letter abbreviations and 2 with 3 letters so had to do it that way for balance.

Oh, and of the 3 with 4 letters....USMC, USAF, USCG.....the Marines are the senior service.  USAF being the youngest of course.

Nice work for a great cause!  Enjoy, J.D.

What a great gun for a great cause!  And wonderful blending of the old with the new in both design and tradition.

Awesome work!

Everyone, thanks very much for the kind words!  It is a great cause.  I've had the honor to work with some of these guys in the past, in a different capacity, and was humbled.

I was waiting for someone to bring up the location of the service branches, LOL!  I'd like to say it was for balance and all that, but I was once a member of Uncle Sam's Mountain Climbers, so what can I say...

Tim, if this makes you feel any better, I had the honor of participating in the Ft. Belvoir Army Birthday celebration this year where I portraid America's first soldier, a rifleman of the Continental Army.  Great event!

Beautifully done and I'm sure it will be greatly appreciated by our service members.

I'm looking, but I'm not seeing the USMM, (US Merchant Marine) which remains the only branch of the services that sends it's academy cadets into war, before they finish their studies.

Great rifle and for a very, very worthy cause.
