GOOD LIGHT

four foot shop lights (excuse the expression) suck. Go get an eight foot double lamp floourescent fixture and be done with it.

A good supply of broken chunks of window glass. This is the best scraper you can get. You can't sharpen a tool, or roll on a bur, that will compare. It works great on powder horns, and ivory as well. unfortunately it is usually recycled today, so you really have to jump on the neighbors, when they break a window.

A good knife, kept well sharpened. It gets used for layout, striking lines, scraping, etc.

I have a whittling knife someone gave me years ago. It has a one inch blade and a long handle. I am going to make a sheath for it that attaches to my apron because no matter what I am working on, I am reaching for it constantly.

Coryjoe, I agree that the ALR is a priceless gift, but having an actual live body to show you the way is much better. The seminars at Dixon's is a wonderful reference too, and much better than the simple printed word. But if you live near someone whose work you admire, that's the best teacher. I'm lucky enough to live near Cody Tetachuck - and though we only see each other every couple of years, I think we glean a lot of knowledge in technique and inspiration from each other. You folks on the eastern seaboard have no excuse not to be able to find someone like Cody. I pray that Dave and Gail Rase can come to Heffley again this year...that'd be a treat.

Overlooked building tool..perhaps an indirect glancing light source, to see ripples and waves, and confirm straight lines.

Have to amen the having mentor close.I have had,since 1976,Bob Walden of Poca,Wva,to show this pilgrim the way,from safe shooting,'skinnin,fire starting,and building the rifle guns we all hold dear.
I have helped him on his vehicles,as my training and work was auto/truck mechanic for too many years.It has been a very good trade.In addition,we help each other out when the need arises.
Kudos for all y'all here on the forum,too.I have learned much here.Dont know what I could contribute to the info pool,but I like it here.Thanks for lettin a ol mountaineer ramble.Dave

May not be historically correct, and I know it comes from my decoy carving roots, but a dremel and a variable temp woodburner get used as much as anything on my bench.

I'll agree with mentors, too. Lucky enough that we've got a skilled group that meets every week and it's invaluable, espceially when getting started.

A metal contour gauge is great for inleting, checking symetry, etc.

There are plastic contour gauges that work as well and don't scratch the wood. (Says the man who didn't realize the scratches were there til the stain went on . . . . )
