Rear sight on a pistol

Just finishing up a Chambers pistol kit.  Any thoughts on where the rear sight should be?  I laid it out where my old eyes can see it and it's directly over where the loaded ball would be seated.  Would a shallow dovetail here be dangerous.   It's a .54 swamped 13" barrel with a .920 OD where the sight will be.

I can't call Jim until Monday and I was hoping to finish it this weekend.

Hi Bill,
You should be fine.  Just make a shallow dovetail.  The dovetails cut for the sights on the pistols below overlap the powder chamber.

A lot of it depends on how it sights in.  My Chambers pistol has the sight placed 2.5" from the breech-end of the barrel.

Since you are already using  short barrel, you should try to get the longest sight radius possible...........Don

There's always the option of setting it back at the breechplug tang/barrel juncture, or even slightly out on the tang.  I've had a couple of pistols done like that and it worked well (from a shooting, if not design, standpoint).
