No leg pulling, Mike, not that I know of. I saw A Martin in the carving and finish. He's got a certain 'signature', and it's definitely there. Patchbox and entry thimble carvings are give-aways.

You have a good eye, you're right of course. It's such a break from his lehigh stuff ...very cool to see him work out side of his comfort zone. Well, maybe their isn't a place he's uncomfortable.

Better look again at that lock. Its not stock from this century. The maker was Henri Meunier.

The lock is definately an old one. Allen sent it to me to make a new tumbler for it and some lock bolts.....187 dia by 10 TPI...a very odd thread, as well as replace some other screws that were too badly worn. If you have a copy of the KRA cd showing the guns of Lehigh County, the earliest gun on the cd is where I think Allen got his ideas for this rifle...Allen is a true "through-back" to a later era...quite a remarkable builder..Dan Fruth

Allen had this rifle at the KRA meeting in June, it's even more impressive in person.

It's an original lock from Germany, I believe. Allen used some details I've seen on some of his other rifles; the patchbox lid carving, tang carving, and such remind me of another early rifle patterned after an original Shumway highlighted in a Muzzle Blasts article entitled, "Lehigh Rifle Evolution" or something like that.

Hey Acer,
Here is one that I've drooled over for a long time:

You probably know which table this rifle was on. I think this is one where everything came together. The finish really shows off the curl. The carving is exceptional. One aspect of the carving that appeals to me is the careful contouring of the various elements. I don't have a photo of the entire gun, but feel the gun flows well from end to end. Jim hit a home run with this one. (I have to say that when Gary suggested this, this gun immediately came to mind.)

You're asking touch questions. As far as the finish, I'm drawn to a stain that allows the curl to really pop. This certainly does. With carving I admire the ability to give good three dimensional look with low relief. And, part of this is a "gut" reaction to a great gun. It's hard to put in words, but I know what I like.

Thanks for posting that Colin. I like the gun that follows the 'Chief's gun'. It would not be my favorite in the show, but there are some things I like about it. One is that the architecture is very Germanic. The engraving and carving is not high grade, but effectively decorates. I especially like the underside shot of the guard, where it shows wrist flowing into the lock mouldings.

I couldn't help but take a bunch- my first Lexington CLA show. Glad you all like. Some of the pictures posted in pairs and I had them all flipped around correctly. I don't know what happened there. I picked up parts for a build, tools, a book, and a bucks county youth stock with a tiny rice swamped 40 cal. (my kids are gona be spoiled but I'm trying to give them something other than video games to have fun with). MY BANK ACCOUNT DIDN"T LIKE THE SHOW! It was great to see so many people that I hadn't seen in a while and others I'd only heard about. We had some good conversations too.

Ya, Jeff's right. Jim Chambers made the rifle around 1980. I see it 2 or 3 times a year at the various NMLRA shoots or other events. I've taken photos of it on a number of occasions. Jim has a wonderful ability to do low relief carving and still have a great 3 dimensional affect (IMHO). Obviously he has a talent for making the curl really pop as well.

There were a lot of great guns at CLA, but this is the one I'd take home with me. And the fact that a friend made the rifle has nothing to do with it.

Here's another rifle that caught my eye.
What I like about this one: The timeframe appeals to me, Revolutionary War period, and it looks like a rifle that a regular fellow would own. It's really cleanly done, understated, but great architecture to me.

I am glad someone posted pictures of Allen's latest rifle. I was thinking of that particular rifle or another early style rifle that he had displayed. I did not get any pictures taken. I think I like the John sheetz rifle best on the original rifle side. It is a great rifle that had a lot of nice details incorporated. I guess I must like acorns. Don't know if that rifle was used much in the woods, but it had to be one of the fanciest squirrel rifles around.
The coolest tool that I saw was the cock swage that was part of the display. The swage was a hardi tool that you would mount in an anvil. Really cool thing to see. It would definitely save some time forging a cock.
Overall, I enjoyed the show.

The cock swage on the Sheetz table was most definitely very cool.
To many other great things to remember them all. I didn't take any pics this year, but I certainly wish I would have.

Bill Shipman had an original and the bench copy he made on his table. That made me drool a lot..... both rifles were made with superb craftsmanship.
