I have gone completely over to the dark side....flat faced breech plugs. No more 'school of hard Nocks' for me.

Yo,acer,I am with you on this one.Have several Hawkens, and other longrifles. On my 62 Hawken, built from tow kit a couple years ago,it liked to drove us nuts with ignition problems, related to them infernal patent breeches.I rigged up a bronze wire bore brush to clean out counter bored chamber, then used a similar size swab tip to clean up.If the old timers had these kind of probs with the then new system,I see why they shined on rocklocks as long as they could.'Sides,ol fat fingers a fumblin with caps probly got a bunch of em kilt.
Docone,there is sho'nuff a bunch o Hawken fans on here.Good luck with your build.Dave

I remember, back a couple of decades, when I did my Gemmer.
Still got the guts, but the wood was a disaster.
I think I am in good company now.
Maybe this time I will succeed.
Good to meet you, all.
