I. Berlin style rifle
« on: August 23, 2012, 11:46:01 PM »
I've had this rifle lying around the shop for several months, pretty much in the white, and have finally been able to finish it.  As you can see, it's based on Berlin's work.  The barrel is a .54 Colerain, oct/round, Reeves trigger guard and butt piece, and a Allen lock.  Critques, comments, questions are certainly welcome.

Thanks,

Very nice, Ed!  How do you keep those little ditzel dots from popping off on the patchbox lid?   ???

How much time did you spend laying out the carving?  I really like the carving at the front of the cheekpiece.  Fits great with the Berlin design elements.

Ed , Really nice work as always. Your carving looks flawless, as does your metal work.  I'll offer a thought. The cheekpiece looks sort of " forward" on the buttstock, I know you needed the space at the rear for carving so to my eye shortening the length of the cheekpiece on the wrist side a bit would balance things a little better for me.

Thanks all.

Rich - It's been so long since I layed out the designs, I really can't remember.  I do everything on paper first, then transfer to the stock w/ carbon paper.

Tom- Nice catch, lol.  If I had a "wood mover", I'd move the whole thing back a bit, I really didn't need all that area behind the cheek piece...

Ed,

Beautiful work as always. I like the carving especially on the cheek side.  I love the way you "antique" your rifles.  I would have liked the carving behind the tang to be more pronounced, but that is just my personal preference.

What is the barrel length?

Looks great Ed. Real crisp, beautiful work. I was wondering about the barrel length too.

Ed, that is a very nice rifle. Well executed carving. It's a big undertaking, and you did a great job. Thanks for posting this.

Ed, it is good to see another rifle of yours.  The carving is really crisp and your architecture really flows.  Let me borrow that for a couple of years and I'll see if I can get that cheek piece to move.

Very impressive gun.

Ed,

Fantastic rifle and excellent execution.   How did you achieve that color on the lock and barrel?

Beautiful color, beautiful form, the carving is very well done. Overall a very pleasing package.

I agree that the cheek piece could be positioned toward the butt stock a little more.
My only other thought is that the top of the wrist appears flat from the tang down to the nose of the comb like it didn't quite get blended into  the roundness enough.  Maybe it's the picture ?

Anyway, Beautiful gun

Ed, I've always admired the original and was somewhat intimdated by all that carving. You have done a FANTASTIC recreation of it! Just beautiful!
Oh, the side plate and lock appear to be on top of the wood though....could have been set a tiny bit deeper.
I still love it tho :o

Good observations....

Mark - It's not really flat where you've described it, but it does look that way in the photos.  It's more a function of the carving, but again, I agree, kinda looks that way.  In fact, I had intended on doing incised lines through that area, even had them penciled in, then promptly forgot, and stained the rifle.  Good eye, and I think the incised lines would have gone a long way in addressing that area.

Tom - Side plate I have no problem with, the lock, especially at the tail could be deeper...  Agree it sits a little proud.  I also mulled that over...  Easy fix would be to file the edges down some, then decided not to because it didn't really bother me that much.

Bill - The color is achieved by cold bluing, then rubbing back to the desired color, very simple.  I used Super Blue as a cold blue for this piece, applied with a maroon colored Scotch Brite pad.  (Don't know what grit that is, get them at WoodCraft)  That's the first time I ever used one of those pads for a cold blue, and it worked much better than a cloth.  Anyway, after everything is blued, I used another maroon Scotch Brite pad with a little paraffin oil to rub back to the color you see.
