Hunts for Healing guns
« on: September 09, 2012, 10:08:10 PM »
I finally finished the two guns to donate to the wounded warriors.   These guns were 90% made from parts donated by the members of this forum.  As you saw in a previous post, a third gun was built by Ed Wenger.  At this time we have a fourth gun, a lefty, donated by a very good friend of mine. I'll try to get pics of this one soon.

Th walnut stocked gun has fiber optic sights, not PC, but for a reason.  A soldier I hunted with last year with a TBI couldn't focus on the silver blade, so I made this one so other soldiers won't have the same problem.

Next weekend we are going to the range with all four guns to sight them in.  The following week they will presented to Mindy Piccoitti, Hunts For Healing founder, along with the horns, bags and other accessories.  The second week of October they will be used in a wounded warrior hunt.  I won't be at that hunt, but will be at the January hunt and promise to post many pictures.

Thanks to all who helped,

Bill Daniel

Bill,

I wanted to ask you a question about the checkering on the walnut rifle.... did you do that by hand?  I would like to know what tools you use no matter how you did it.  It looks quite good from what I can see.  Do you have any close up pics of it?

Curtis,
It is hand checkered.  I use DemBart tools as sold by Brownells.   I will post a close up picture later tonight.  I thought it came out OK, considering the eyes are not what they used to be.

About 20 years ago, before plastic stocks, I did a lot of checkering, to the point it almost became a business.  Until the local zoning officer heard I applied for a FFL.

Curtis,
Here's a picture of the HFH gun checkering and a link to a few more pictures of my work.  Can't post them, not allowed here, suppository type.

Bill,

Thanks for tho close ups and the link.  I have a set of Dembart checkering tools plus a jointer an a veiner, however I haven't used them to do any checkering as of yet.  I was curious what you had used.  I'll have to do some practice runs one of these days.
Nice work!
