Piece of wood?  I just put two layers of masking tape over the exit area of the drill and have never splintered one yet.  I also place the tip of my index finger over the tape so I can feel when the drill is about to break through and can let up on the pressure applied to the drill.  And no, Tom I have never drilled into my finger.

Dennis, that works fine when installing the lugs and pipes when the stock is still square.... on a precarve or when you build an Alzheimer's gun and shape the forestock before installing the pipes............ the pin vice is actually very quick and easy...   ;D ;D

Drink more coffee doc, helps prevent & reverse Alzheimer's.

To help prevent wandering and backside blowout, use a parabolic drill having a four facet 60-65° split or back-ground (thinned web) point, 8-10° chisel relief angle, 5k minimum spindle speed.

I like the split point drills.

But you're not going to get 5,000 rpm out of a pin vise!
