It sounds normal so far, for a bench-type gun. The funnel is used by some shooters to prevent powder granguals from sticking to the bore wall, I assume.

Are you describing a/your Nock type breeching ???  The bench shooters do use a long tube funnel so none of the black stuff sticks to the bore wall. They are fussy to the extreme.

And, there surely was a small scraper with that rifle to get down in to that channel to scrape the crud/fouling out...

How do you know that the channel is 1/4 inch?  Have you de-breeched the barrel and measured it?  Those channels are normally no smaller than 3/8ths.

No i did not its all bass and i was afraid i would mess it up.But 1/4inch wood dowel fits tight. This is the only cap rifle i have.I was a little worried about the bass as breach plug and then a hole drilled in it.Should take same load as my 54 flintlock

Yes its brass,it looks like Hawken and that part that houses the trigger and hammer, nipple is one peace then the end has been milled to round and threaded and screws into barrel 5/8 inch and then the hole is drilled back 1 1/4inch to the nipple.Have not shot it yet.

Makes me wonder if it's a Mowrey "Allen and Thurber" with the brass frame?

I had that thought too, Ben, and that it has a bolster-type breech.
