Interesting rifle
« on: September 17, 2012, 06:54:44 PM »
JDM sent me these photos and this is what he had to say about the rifle.
Quote
Over all length is 41 inches with a twelve inch trigger pull. I like to think it was under the Christmas tree for some lucky boy. Its been shot quite a bit . There is a lot of pitting at the breech.
I will let him tell you more about the rifle and answer any questions that you might have about it.

This is a pretty fabulous little southern gun! It is beautifully made and finished, and it is quite apparent that the owner treasured it. I have never seen a blast guard made out of rawhide/leather like this. What a great idea. Someone special received this rifle, and the ornamentation which is beyond the norm for most southern pieces, seems to bear this out. Thanks to the owner for letting the crowd have a look at it, here.

Another interesting thing about this rifle is the guard and triggers.. Normally the guard grip rail has a curl at the rear end.. This rifle has no grip rail, the curl is part of the trigger bar.. I have seen this on a Dugger and Smith rifle ... I don't recall seeing it anywhere else.  But  I am not saying its a Dugger and Smith ..
If you peak under the leather, the lock is marked  BLUE GRASS ...I think its a very neat little rifle....Louie

Very nice little gun.  The builder wasn't messing around here.  Besides the other things you've pointed out he really layed out the stock to get that nice burst of figure in the butt.

I'll put my money up with Dr. Tim's on the side of a lady's gun.  I believe a child's gun of the era would have been as stark and particle as the average man's gun.  For what this one is and when/where it was probably made, this one is special.

Enjoy and thanks for sharing, J.D.

Gentlemen, Thank you for the nice comments.  This is a small rifle. It could blend in on a rack of toy guns and wouldn't be notice. The nose cap is pewter  with nice open work.      The  shaping on the cheek piece side is very well done..This wasn't his first build.  This gun has a Bluegrass lock . All parts appear to be original to the gun.
JDK your right he did use a nice piece of walnut. Might have been made for someone special.  It was well taken care of.
How about where it was made? I'd love to here suggestions.
Thank's for looking. I hope you enjoy seeing it.    JIM

This short rifle has many similarities to rifles made by Green Cornet in Perry County, KY. He similarly built very short guns with short wrists, similar cheekpieces set forward on the butt with basically same shape, and side facings were very similar on both sides. His known guns are iron mounted but the guard on this one has a slightly different finger rail. Rear ramrod pipe and two screw tang are similar to guns from the area as well as walnut stocks. I am not attributing this rifle to Cornett (unless it is a slightly earlier work than ones I have seen), but the strong similarities suggest the gun may have been made in the Perry/Leslie County area of southeastern KY in the mid-1850s or slightly later. Small, triangular inlay work was used in that area on better guns, but the poured chevron nose cap was rare.  Shelby Gallien

What a great little gun. My grandson is just turning 2 and I have had it in mind to do a build that will be his when he is old enough.  I doubt that I will be there to see it but I want something special for him.  This would be just the ticket.  Your post may turn into something much more than just a neat gun to look at for me. Thanks Jack

Jack, I hope you do build one for him . What a great remembrance of you to Carry on through the family.

Shelby , I was hoping you would have some insight. With the Bluegrass lock Kentucky had entered my mind.
