Ball bag
« on: September 24, 2012, 01:56:37 AM »
I missed elk season this year for the first time since 1976. I'm having a knee replaced tomorrow and just haven't been able to walk much less hump my way up mountains etc. I left one ball bag in the woods 2 years ago and have been mad at myself ever since. I asked a friend if he got a bull to save the "bag" for me. He just brought it over with the balls still intact!!!!!I'm thinking this will be a good rehab project from the hair on tanning to the lining and cinch wrap. Anyone ever seen one and if so I would appreciate any ideas on the design and finish. Thanks in advance. FRJ

Gosh guys I just tried to write it up so that the kids on this site don't freek out. I really think its a great way to store my "balls" for my rifle. It was already used to store 2 of them now I will just store 50 or so more. FRJ

The thought of reaching into my rifle bag and grabbing a hold of that isn't appealing.  And carrying a bag of 50 lead balls appeals even less.  I think the better solution is a leather tube which will hold a single column of lead balls for a total of maybe 5 or 6 - and if you want to carry more make a second tube.  So, you need to go deer hunting as the tube from your friends elk is too large in diameter for anything smaller than wall gun balls.  And for gosh sake don't walk around with your hand in your rifle bag all the time like that.   ;D

I once had a beautiful bark tanned pouch by Mark Odel.  He referred to them as a "seamless bag"  It was a huge bull scotum with and piece of belly skin the had the 4 "bumps" on it.  Sadly I let it go on a trade.  Mark did a beautiful in tanning it.

At an Eastern Rondezvous I saw a guy wearing a primitive hat made from a cows utters.  It was "udderly disgusting"

Even when elk aren't in rut they have a strong odor.  I hunt them in the thick junipers where you can't see 30 yards by cutting across the wind until I pick up their scent then go upwind to them.  Sometimes I only find a wet spot - but I have come up on good bulls often enough for this to be very productive for me.  Have to be quiet, patient,  and very tuned into every motion and noise or you will bump them out before you can sort out a shot.

I tried this with a bull I got last year.  It all became a huge joke, (talking about my sack).

I tanned it and worked it as it dried.  What I learned was the sack is pretty thick leather and the more I worked it to loosen up the leather,  the more "bowl shaped" it got.

Didn't really look like it would work for a ball bag.

Here's what we us it for.

Frj,
I have a friend that made a medium size possibles bag out of one. Seems appropriate to keep your balls in.

Well I'm going to eat the elk "oysters" then tan the bag just like the good piece of leather that it is and go from there. By the way I got the knee surgery done on monday and was home yesterday evening. The way I'm progressing I am thinking I'll be good to drive in another week.. I'll start on the bag monday. Wish me luck. FRJ

Welcome to the bionic joint club!

I got a new hip on 8/21. On my feet that day, home in three days. I waited til 4 weeks to drive, since it was my right  hip and I was pretty full of narcotics for a while. I'm just wishing they'd found that I was bone-on-bone a lot sooner.  What a modern miracle.

Follow your surgeons directions and do all the therapy they tell you to. The only folks I know who have had bad joint replacements are the ones who think they are smarter than the docs.

Best wishes, and full steam ahead!

Here in the deep South, many a whitetail scrotum bag covered the gearshift knobs of 4WD Jeeps, Scouts, Dodge Power Wagons, and other pickup trucks. I have seen them used for round ball bags. Most used 20 Mule Team Borox (and old timey washing powder) to preserve and tan them, followed by rubbing in  Mink Oil or Neets Foot Oil. Some use a stopper/plug  made of antler or wood with the base wrapped with sinew or rawhide (deerhide) lashing. The stopper/plug is similar to a turned powder horn plug slightly larger than the diameter of the round balls used.
