Well, as you know I am more of a heavy gun bench shooter. I did pick up this cool rifle from a member here and shot it once on the bench. It really is not a bench gun and I figured for the second time out I would stand. It was pretty gusty today so only shot 5 at the target then tried my luck at hitting some bowling pins at 200 yards. One thing I did notice was the blast of warm air that hits yoru front hand. My front hand is usually tucked under my rear bag, so that was new! I dont know what to expect but 6" didnt seem too bad with the wind. It was fun, now I gotta try a flinter.

Is this the 200 yard target you shot off hand? What type of projectile were you shooting.......roundball or bullet?
I know a lot of shooters, using modern bolt action equipment with good scopes, that can't even get close to this kind
of shooting I know a lot of shooters that couldn't even match this target off a bench..........Don

Please stick to bench shooting, and whatever you do, do not enter any of the matches near me! Just kidding, that looks excellent, and the rifle is perfectly suited to doing what you just did!

I shot in NRA highpower matches for many years and that's the best I've ever seen at 200 yards offhand.

No way! Sorry to mislead, that is 100 yrd target. Something got lost in my original posting. I was just happy that when I walked to see my target there were 5 holes! I didn't bother using a spotter. Rifle is a 45. Shooting a .451 RB.

Then at 200 I was shooting some pins, I went 2 for 4? I thought I may have went 3/4 but was hard to tell. It was a hoot though. Now I need a nice swamped flinter

Did that schuetzen sight come with the rifle? I am trying to find one and other than the Pedersoli ones they can be a bit hard to find. Still kickin myself for not picking up one in Baltimore Arms show earlyer this year.

That's wonderful shooting for offhand at 200yards - 2 for 4 shots, or maybe 3 for 4 on bowling pins - WOW. 6" offhand 5-shot group at 100 yards in wind with a .45- yes- tha'ts excellent too.

There were a lot of chunk targets at Helfey Creek Rendezvous that didn't have 6" groups on them and they were shot prone with a rest at only 50yards.

That is a VERY nice looking ofhand rifle. Such a peep sight certainly helps.

The best offhand group I ever saw shot at 100yards, was made by my brother - 5 consecutive shots into 3"- tea-cup size with a .50 cal flintlock. Hatchet Jack's kid now owns that rifle - I think.

Well, it is good to know that I am making progress in my shooting!
The rear peep came with the rifle. I have a couple schutezen style rifles that I have yet to shoot. I will keep an eye out for a sight for you. I like these as some of the mechanisms are unique. The one on the rifle I have shown you is just a simple sight. Some, like the ones below vary the aperature and also have a diopter to magnify the target/front sight. Here are a couple of mine that both have a
Variable aperature/diopter that telescope

On my rifle, there is another sight further down on the barrel. I am not sure if you are to use all 3 sights together or remove the peep? You can see the other sight here...

I actually struggle with the rear sight/front combo. I typically shoot with a rear peep with a front aperature (aka redfield etc). The front on this one is a buckhorn like hood with central post. I find myself wandering a good deal and the best I could do was squeeze the trigger when the post landed on the target. Far from precise! Maybe I just need more practice (amen!)

Thank you for the contact info. I managed to find a pretty old globe sight off a schuetzen rifle... Its a delicate piece on the inside... makes the redfield and lyman front sights look clunky... I'll take some pictures and post them. The inside blade screws out and is so delicate I had to be real carefull trying to clean the accumulated gunk off of it.

But notice what he said, a custom built rifle from a member here. You should expect accuracy like that because you bought a rifle from someone who knows how to build a rifle. I purchased a rifle from TOTW built by a member here, (NM) that could put two 45 caliber holes in a 12 oz. beer can at a 75 yards, OFF HAND.

Plastikosmd, it does my heart good to see that you are enjoying that ole schuetzen halfstock! It does shoot very well indeed and almost as accurate as my 54 Hawken. I took the Hawken out over the weekend in some very high wind and totally irradicated the center out of the target's bulls eye at 100 yards. I was useing a rest but strictly open buckhorn sights. I have never been much of an award winning target shooter, but that rifle could make me one.

Did you build that one (the Schuetzen)? It looks like a fine machine for offhand shooting. I expect even without the peep (illegal for most matches) it would do pretty well.

it really is a great rifle and I just love the balance. I shot it with 65 grains as you stated when I got it and it did very well off the bench, maybe 1.5 inchs at 100. I know I could have done better with a front aperature. I upped it to 70 grains this time for a bit more velocity due to the wind. I will try it back at 65 standing and see how I do. Right now it is my favorite offhand bp rifle (one of one!)

bgf, the schuetzen was made by Phil Davidson from Michigan. It was pictured in Muzzleblasts back in Nov. of 1995.

Thanks. I don't have that MB, but I know a guy that probably does! I like the Schuetzens (all variants), but I've already got too many irons in the fire to start an all consuming variant of the hobby like that

BFG- that looks like an exceptional light offhand rifle, doesn't it.

My .45 has a GM barrel with 60" twist. It likes both water based lubes and oil based lubes. With the water based, it shoots well with from 55gr. 3F or 2F to 75gr. 3f or 2F - all GOEX. With a slippery lube, like Shenendoah or LHV, it demands 75gr. 3F or 85gr. 2F. That is to shoot 1/2" bench groups at 50 yards. I use a 10 ounce (.0225") denim patch with .445" ball. It shoots equally well with the red/white/blue/blue ticking (.023") I send to a couple people. Measurements with calipers squeezed hard (between finger and thumb), not a mic, which measures thinner.
