Luke, Many of us use the patchbox release mechanism that was used most often by original builders from the regional area or " school " in which our build is trying to emulate. So it depends on what we are building. Each release mechanism has it's own challenges.

My first eight rifles had six different types of releases. The most difficult to get adjusted properly was the one where the upper hinge knuckle is the release. Geometry works against you on that one. Seems that the most common is the one through the heel of the buttplate. Use a steel button and slot it to look like a screw. I personally don't like the button in the buttplate. Seems to snag on too much stuff.

I no longer recall how I did this rectangular Sell release, save that I made it out of Frank Mittermeier's "Swedish spring steel" & heat treated w propane torch.
Well, if I could do it 1/3 scale it should be right easy full scale.

The most simple release is a button in the toe engaging a spring steel catch driven into the wood. Forget the pictures in many books. The catch should be dead straight to the point where it enters the wood. No flex. Easy.
